India didn’t allow the Sri Lanka to go past the deficit as they bowled out the home side before Tea on day 4 for 386 runs and they fell 53 runs short and faced an innings defeat. Though the Lankans continued to put on a fight like on the penultimate day of the match like they did on Day 3 in the 2nd innings. Sri Lanka were faltered in front of Ravindra Jadeja, who picked up a 5-wicket haul, his 9th in Test cricket.

0 – Number of instances before this Test match when a team lost the game by an innings despite two batsmen scoring centuries while following-on. Sri Lanka’s innings was the first such instance. India vs West Indies in 1962 and West Indies vs South Africa in 2004 lost the match though two batsmen scored centuries while following-on but they were both by wickets margin.

1 – This is the first time Team India has won a Test by an innings margin on Sri Lankan soil. None of their previous 7 Test wins in Sri Lanka were by an innings.

3 – Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin scoring fifties and picking a 5-wicket haul in this Test is only the third instances for a team where two of their players scored a fifty and took a 5-fer in the same match.

4 – Number of consecutive Test wins for India in Sri Lanka; the joint-longest winning streak for any team in Sri Lanka against the hosts. Australia defeated SL in SL in 4 consecutive Tests between 2004 and 2011.

4 – Number of Man of the Match awards for Ravindra Jadeja in Test cricket since August 2016; the most by any player. Virat Kohli has 3 Man of the Match awards in Tests in this period.

7 – Number of different home teams India have defeated by innings margin in Tests. Sri Lanka is the 7th team India have defeated on their own soil. They are yet to win a Test by an innings in New Zealand and South Africa.

8 – Number of consecutive Test series’ India have won so far; the 2nd longest series winning streak for any team. England and Australia won 9 consecutive series in 1884-1892 and 2005-2008 respectively.

39 – Matches Ajinkya Rahane needed to complete 50 catches in Test cricket; he is the 2nd quickest Indian fielder to take 50 catches among the 14 players who have taken 50 and more catches in Tests.

101 – Wickets Ravichandran Ashwin has taken while opening the bowling in Test cricket; he is the first spinner in Test history to take 100 wickets while opening the bowling.

141 – Dimuth Karunaratne’s 141 is the 3rd highest score by a Sri Lankan in the follow-on innings. His 152 vs New Zealand in 2014 is the highest for Sri Lanka while following-on.
