Sri Lanka finally came close to defeating India in a game on this tour as Akila Dananjaya’s 6-wicket haul put the home side in the driving seat before a brilliant century partnership between Bhuvneshwar Kumar and MS Dhoni took India past the target in a rain affected 2nd ODI. Indian opener Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan put on a 109-run opening stand but Dananjaya ripped through the visitors’ middle order as they were reduced to 131/7 in their pursuit of 231.

Here we look at all the stats and records created during the game.

2 – MS Dhoni and Bhuvneshwar Kumar are the 3rd pair after Farook Engineer and Bapu Nadkarni of India and Mahela Jayawardene and Chaminda Vaas of Sri Lanka with two 100+ stands for the 8th wicket or later in International cricket. Dhoni and Bhuvneshwar put on 140 for the 9th wicket at Chepauk Test in 2013. They are the first pair with century stands for 8th and lower wicket in both Tests and ODIs.

3 – Number of 6-wicket hauls in ODI cricket against India since 2015; the most against any team in this period. Mitchell Starc and Mustafizur Rahman are the other two bowlers with a 6-fer against India in ODIs since 2015.

6 – Team India chasing down 100 runs after losing the 7th wicket is only the 6th such instance in ODI cricket. Last time a team chased down 100 runs after losing the 7th wicket was in CWC 2015 by Afghanistan against Scotland (114).

6/54 – Akila Dananjaya’s figures of 6/54 are the best bowling figures in ODIs coming in losing cause by a spinner. Paul Stirling’s 6/55 against Afghanistan earlier this year is the only other 6-fer by a spinner in losing cause.

9 – Bhuvneshwar Kumar is only the 9th player and 2nd Indian after Madan Lal in history to score fifty-plus while batting at No.9 or lower in both Tests and ODIs.

22India’s 7-wicket collapse of 22 runs is their joint 2nd worst in ODI cricket. They lost seven wickets for 21 runs at Colombo (RPS) in 1993 and 22 runs at Kolkata in 1996, both against Sri Lanka.

22 – India’s 7-wicket of 22 runs is the worst for any team in a successful ODI run-chase. The previous highest was also by India, who recorded a collapse of 39 runs – 159/2 to 198/9 against New Zealand in 2003 at Auckland.

43 – Rohit Sharma’s 43-ball fifty in this game is his fastest fifty in ODIs. His previous fastest fifty was off 44 balls against Pakistan in 2014 at Dhaka.

54 – Sharma’s 54 in this game is only the 2nd ODI for his in Sri Lanka. In the previous 10 ODIs in Sri Lanka, he collectively aggregated 37 runs.

100* – The 100-run stand between Dhoni and Bhuvneshwar is now the highest 8th wicket stand in ODIs for India. The previous highest was 84 among Harbhajan Singh and Praveen Kumar against Australia in 2009. Overall, this is only the 10th century stand for the 8th wicket in ODIs.

120 – Number of times MS Dhoni remained unbeaten in an innings in International cricket; the most number of not outs in Internationals for any player. He went past Muttiah Muralitharan who remained not out in 119 innings.

2009 – Last time before Bhuvneshwar, an Indian batsman scored an ODI fifty batting at No.9 or lower was Praveen Kumar against Australia in 2009. He scored 54* off 51 balls in that game.

2013 – Last time Virat Kohli scored four or fewer runs before this game in a successful ODI run-chase was back in 2013 against Sri Lanka in the Tri-Series final where he scored two runs.

3011 – Partnership runs between Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan in ODI cricket. They are the 32nd pair and the 8th from India to share 3000 runs in ODIs.
