Less than a week after smashing the highest total in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), the Rangpur Riders have produced a record stand to defeat the Dhaka Dynamites. Chasing a target of 187, Rangpur lost wickets of Chris Gayle and Rilee Rossouw for just five runs on the board. Alex Hales, who scored a century along with Rossouw on Friday, once again looked in great touch.

AB de Villiers, who walked out to bat, began by taking on the opposition bowlers in the powerplay. The former South Africa International raced to an 8-ball 28 before building the chase. With regular boundaries, the duo kept the defending champions ahead of the required rate as they completed the chase with 10 balls to spare. De Villiers scored an unbeaten 50-ball 100 while Hales scored 85* off 53.

4 – De Villiers’ century in this game was his 4th in Twenty20 cricket. He is only the 2nd player from South Africa to score as many centuries in this format. Quinton de Kock also hit four T20 hundreds thus far.


5 – ABD now has been involved in five different 150+ stands in the T20 cricket; only the 3rd player to be in as many 150+ partnerships in this format. Chris Gayle has been involved in seven different 150+ stands while Virat Kohli also featured in five of those. De Villiers and Kohli shared four 150+ partnerships in T20s.


30 – Number of player of the match awards in Twenty20 cricket for AB de Villiers; the joint 3rd most for any player. Only Chris Gayle (57) and Shahid Afridi (33) have more player of the match awards in this format than De Villiers. He shares the 3rd spot with Dwayne Bravo and Luke Wright who have featured in over 300 T20 matches.


50 – Balls De Villiers needed for his century in this game. Three of his four T20 hundreds have come in 50 or fewer balls. Only Chris Gayle (9) has more T20 centuries coming in 50 or fewer deliveries. Brendon McCullum, Aaron Finch and Luke Wright also have three T20 hundreds in 50 or fewer balls.


184* – The unbeaten 184-run partnership between AB de Villiers and Alex Hales is now the highest 3rd wicket partnership in Twenty20 cricket. The previous highest was 171 between Ian Bell and Adam Hose of Birmingham against Northamptonshire during the Tied T20 Blast match in 2018.

The ABD-Hales stand is also the 2nd highest in T20s for the 3rd or lower wicket. Gujarat’s Manpreet Juneja and Abdulahad Malik put on an unbeaten 202-run stand for the 4th wicket against Kerala during the 2013 SM Ali T20 tournament.


184* – The partnership of 184 between ABD and Hales is the 3rd highest in Bangladesh Premier League for any wicket. The Rangpur Riders’ pair of Chris Gayle and Brendon McCullum added 201* for the 2nd wicket also against the Dhaka Dynamites in the 2017 BPL final. Lou Vincent and Shahriar Nafees carried bat for an unbeaten 197-run opening stand for Khulna Royal Bengals in the 2013 edition against Duronto Rajshahi.
