Shikhar Dhawan carried on his sensational form into the ODI series against Sri Lanka as the Indian opener struck a blistering century in the series opener at the Dambulla. Walking out to bat in reply of Sri Lanka’s 216, Dhawan scored an unbeaten 132 to guide India to a 9-wicket win with 127 balls to spare. In the process, Dhawan hit the 2nd fastest ODI century by an Indian against Sri Lanka by taking only 71 balls for his hundred.

Dhawan hit 20 fours and three sixes during his stay of 90-balls as he scored at a strike-rate of 146.66 in the innings. After Rohit Sharma’s dismissal, Dhawan put on an unbeaten 197-run stand with Virat Kohli for the 2nd wicket to take India home. This was the highest partnership for the 2nd wicket on Sri Lankan soil in ODI cricket.

Dhawan recorded the highest individual ODI score at the venue of the game, Dambulla. In the process, he went past the previous best of 127 by Tamim Iqbal, which he scored in March earlier this year. The 132 is also the 3rd highest individual score in ODIs for an Indian in Sri Lanka.

This was Dhawan’s 11th century in his ODI career as he became the 40th player to score 11 and more centuries in ODI cricket and the 9th player from India. Among the 39 players who have scored 11 ODI hundreds before Dhawan, only three players have taken fewer innings to score their 11th ODI ton than Dhawan. He scored this ton in his 86th innings, as many as Australia’s David Warner.

The South African openers, Hashim Amla and Quinton de Kock scored their 11th ODI century in their 64th and 65th innings respectively. Indian skipper Virat Kohli struck his 11th hundred in his 82 innings. In Women’s ODI cricket, only Meg Lanning has scored 11 and more ODI centuries and she achieved it quicker than Men by taking only 59 innings.
