Jasprit Bumrah didn’t take too long to settle to the International cricket as he quickly became a crucial part of the Indian team ever since his debut in 2016. With his variations and skill of shooting down perfect yorkers in the death overs, Bumrah makes things tough for the batsmen. In the South Africa ODI series that was dominated by the wrist spinners, Bumrah restricted the home team’s top order with economical spells taking eight wickets with at least one wicket in all six matches.
Bumrah’s performances helped him to top the ICC Bowler rankings in the ODI format with 787 rating points. He currently shares the top spot with Afghanistan’s leg-spinner Rashid Khan. Earlier, Bumrah became the first Indian player to top the ICC T20I rankings for the bowlers. By becoming the No.1 bowler in ODI cricket, Bumrah is now only the 5th Indian and the first since Ravindra Jadeja in 2013 to achieve this feat.
The other three Indians to be ranked No.1 in the ODI format were Maninder Singh, Kapil Dev and Anil Kumble; all of them prior to the 21st century. Kapil and Bumrah are the only Indian pacers to top the bowlers’ chart in this format. The 24-year-old made his ODI debut in January 2016 and needed only 755 days to become the No.1 which is the shortest span among the Indian players who became the No.1 bowlers in this format. Jadeja needed 1635 days for this feat from his debut, more than twice the number of days Bumrah needed.
The Indian pacer feat stands at No.13 in the overall list of the shortest span for becoming the No.1 bowler in ODI format. His consistent run in recent ODIs helped him to achieve a career-best rating of 787 points which is the 4th highest for an Indian bowler and also the highest in the last 20 years. Anil Kumble last had more than 787 rating in December 1996 but never went past this mark again despite playing till 2007. Among the pacers, only Kapil Dev (845) achieved a higher rating than Bumrah.
