It is not very common that you see a player who has scored a century walk out to bat at No.11 in Test cricket even though he was the last batsman to walk out of the dressing room before eventually scoring a hundred. But so far, 20 players have played at the No.11 spot even after scoring a century in the Test cricket with most of them virtue of injuries and a few due to the team combinations.
Among the 20 players, 14 were forced to bat down the order after getting injured earlier in the game in a scenario where their team needed them to bat. Of these 14, Wasim Raja’s was a rare case as the Pakistan batsman had to bat at No.11 following an injury he caught up after scoring a century in the first innings of the same Test match. England’s Godfrey Evans had to bat twice at No.11 following an injury he caught up in the game.
The last player who already had a Test century and batted at No.11 due to injury was England star all-rounder Ben Stokes as he walked out last after been injured during his side’s tour of UAE against Pakistan in 2015.
A total of six players were slated to bat at No.11 even after having a century on their name in Test cricket. The most recent of them was Stuart Broad who batted at No.11 in the first Test match of the series in India as all the 11 players in his side had a first-class hundred and players with better batting abilities walked out ahead of him.
Of the 20 players who batted at No.11 in Tests after scoring a century, five of them had a double century to their credit before batting at No.11 due to injury. The batsman with the highest individual score to walk out to bat at No.11 in Test cricket is England’s Denis Compton who played a brilliant inning of 278 before it.
