After a couple of single-digit scores, Rohit Sharma bounced back with a bang scoring a 162-run knock in the crucial 4th ODI against the Windies. The game was marked to be the return of International cricket to Brabourne which was hosting an ODI game after 12 years and also the second of the Indian team. Rohit, the local boy, ensured he started on this occasion scoring 162 off 137 balls with 20 fours and four sixes. His 211-run stand for the 3rd wicket with Ambati Rayudu changed the momentum of the game.
Rohit Sharma has already recorded some important moments in his career at the Brabourne Stadium. In 2007, he became the first Indian to score a T20 century and registered his maiden first-class triple century in 2009. He is now also the first player to score an ODI century at the Brabourne Stadium. The previous highest individual ODI score at this venue was only 92 by Adam Gilchrist in the 2006 Champions Trophy game also against the Windies. Rayudu followed Rohit to become the second player.
Rohit thus became only the 5th Indian player to score an ODI century at his home venue. His innings of 162 is the highest among those five instances. The first of the five Indians with an ODI ton at home venue was Navjot Singh Sidhu in the 1990 Chandigarh ODI against the Bangladesh where he scored an unbeaten 104. Sachin Tendulkar scored 114 in the 1996 ODI game against South Africa played at the Wankhede Stadium which is 500 meters away from Brabourne.
Virat Kohli scored an unbeaten 112 in the 2011 ODI against England at his home ground Feroz Shah Kotla in Delhi; 15 years after Sachin’s ton in Mumbai. In the first ODI of 2017, Kedar Jadhav scored a quick-fire 120 batting with Virat in the Pune ODI against England. Manoj Prabhakar, born in Uttar Pradesh, scored an unbeaten 102 in Kanpur but his cricketing career was restricted to Delhi only. Rohit also scored 125 in the 2017 ODI against Australia in Nagpur; the city of his birth.
