Team India will be playing its 9th ICC event final on Sunday against Pakistan in the Champions Trophy 2017; the 2nd most number of finals for any team in the ICC events, as Australia has played 10 finals. Overall, this is the 54th ODI tournament in which India has made it to the final.
Their final record hasn’t been one to cheer about like their record in the group games, but of late they have developed a habit of finishing on a high. Between 1999 and 2005, India qualified for finals in 18 ODI tournaments but lost 15 of those. They managed to win only one of those 18 while other two finals ended without a result which meant India had a chance to share the trophy.
However, in the last 10 years, India have qualified for finals in 10 different ODI tournaments in which they ended up winning six and lost other four. Three of those 6 wins have come in the last 6 years which includes their triumph in the 2011 World Cup and 2013 Champions Trophy. Last time India has lost an ODI tournament final was in a Triangular series in 2010 in Sri Lanka.
Another heartwarming fact for the Indians as far as their record in finals is concerned is that they have won all the 3 tournament finals they have played on English soil. India won their first ever ODI tournament in 1983, the World Cup. During their finals drought between 1999 and 2005, the NatWest Series win in 2002 was the only positive result for the Men in Blue. Recently in 2013, they bagged the Champions Trophy and will be defending their title in England this time.
However, India’s record in the finals isn’t great against Pakistan as they lost 6 tournaments to them and have managed only three championships which include the ICC World T20 in 2007, the only ICC event in which both the teams faced off in the final to date.
