India’s Tour of South Africa was already very dramatic and to top it all up, the Johannesburg Test, the final one in the three-match series was the epitome of drama from the first day. Day Three, in fact, was enough to satiate an appetite of cricket drama for a whole calendar year.

There was enough talk about the Wanderers pitch being a poor and unfair one in the sense that it wasn’t one for a proper bat vs ball contest. Questions were raised about how this pitch isn’t attracting as much outrage and criticism as the Nagpur one dished out to South Africa in 2015. However, all those questions have now been answered as now the ground faces a possibility of even losing rights to hold a match at the venue.

The pitch with its uneven bounce had troubled batsmen since the start. Hashim Amla had suffered some blows in the ribs in the first innings along with Morne Morkel who needed treatment for his fingers. However, this wasn’t purely the bowlers’ work but the notorious pitch that made sure every second delivery was nasty.

It was followed up by Indian batsmen suffering a worse situation as the pitch deteriorated and the cracks deepened by India’s second innings. Murali Vijay, Virat Kohli, Ajinkya Rahane and Bhuvneshwar Kumar all played gutsy knocks when the pitch was spewing venom, making their runs invaluable. The Indians did not fret or complain despite several blows even though the Proteas bowling did not go soft on short-pitched deliveries and bouncers.

However, it was when India was bowling to South Africa in the second innings when the pitch started to act out again after having “eased” out a bit. Dean Elgar first suffered one blow on his hand after a medium-paced delivery from Bhuvneshwar. Umpires let go of it once again until a short delivery by Jasprit Bumrah hit Elgar on his helmet. It was a nasty blow and could have been fatal had it not been for the helmet which finally indicated to the umpires and referees that something had to be done. The situation was then taken to the match referee and the two captains, calling off the play for the day.

There were several opinions sending Twitter into a tizzy. A specific tweet from Suniel Shetty caught the eye of social media where he is taking a dig at the analysts and cricket experts saying, “Good Show #TeamIndia ! Hopefully now, the ‘gyaan devs’ will keep their ‘gyaan’ for themselves & let you all play!”
