Former Indian batsman Sunil Gavaskar recently said that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will find it difficult to get any better candidates than Rahul Dravid for the post of India head coach. His statement has come a day after Ricky Ponting tipped Rahul Dravid to be a good candidate for the post of the Indian team head coach.

Sunil Gavaskar, while talking to the NDTV, said he has been vouching for Rahul Dravid’s appointment for the head coach for quite some time now. Gavaskar has batted for his opinion time and again. He also accepted the fact that every player needs a bit of breathing space after retirement and Dravid has got that. He now feels the former Indian batsman is fit to take charge of the national coaching duties.

“I have been saying that for long. Every player needs a cooling period (after retirement) and it seems Rahul Dravid has served his cooling period,” Gavaskar said.

He further added that Dravid is the most suited candidate for the job and even hinted that BCCI need not look beyond Rahul Dravid for the job. “My honest advise to BCCI is that in case they are looking for a change there is no one better than Rahul Dravid,” he quoted.

Earlier, former Australian captain Ricky Ponting also backed Rahul Dravid as the next head coach of India after Duncan Fletcher. “I don’t think BCCI will find many better candidates than someone like him (Dravid). If he’s interested in doing the job, he will do a good job,” Ponting had quoted earlier.

Rahul Dravid coached the U19 Indian team at the ICC U19 World Cup recently. He is currently the mentor of the Delhi Daredevils team in the IPL. Many young players have credited their success and improvements to Rahul Dravid.
