India started off the three-match T20I series on a winning note as they registered a victory over Australia in an intense affair by 11 runs at Manuka Oval in Canberra. The first T20I also marked an international debut in the shortest format of the game for pacer T Natarajan. On his debut, the Tamil Nadu-born left-arm fast-medium bowler hogged all the limelight as he finished with 3 wickets.

The toss went Aaron Finch’s way and he elected to ball first. Sent to bat, the Indian team managed to cross the 160-mark as the all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja smashed the ball all over the park towards the fag end of the innings. In 23 deliveries, Jadeja smashed unbeaten 44 runs including 5 boundaries and 1 maximum. KL Rahul, who opened the innings also made a significant contribution by scoring a half-century (51 off 40).

Chasing 162, the hosts got off to an explosive start as they collected 53 runs in the first six overs. But Yuzvendra Chahal, who was named as the concussion substitute for Jadeja, brought team India back in the game by taking two prized wickets of Aaron Finch and Steve Smith.

T Natarajan claims three wickets on his T20I debut

This was followed by Natarajan sending the power-hitter Glenn Maxwell back to the pavilion when he was playing at 2. Apart from this, the seamer also took two more wickets of D’Arcy Short and Mitchell Starc to help India defend the target. Meanwhile, the delivery that stole all the limelight was the one Natarajan bowled to Mitchell Starc to take his wicket in the 19th over.

On the last ball of the penultimate over, the left-arm seamer bowled his signature yorker to Starc. The batsman tried to swipe it across the line but completely missed it and the ball directly uprooted the stumps. Eventually, the 29-year old finished with figures of 4-0-22-3.

Natarajan is known for his pinpoint yorkers and his heroics in the shortest format of the game are not hidden from anyone. Interestingly, he was added to the India squad of Australia after a brilliant run in the just-concluded 13th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Playing for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), the 29-year-old had picked 16 wickets in 16 games.
