The Pakistan side posted their second consecutive victory on the trot, beating New Zealand by 5 wickets in the 19th match of the 2021 edition of the T20 World Cup. Chasing a target of 135, Pakistan struggled to find momentum in the early part of the innings.

After Babar Azam and Mohamad Rizwan put on a 28-run partnership for the opening wicket, the ‘Men in Green’ kept losing wickets at regular intervals.

Mohammad Rizwan top-scored for the Pakistan side with a sedate 34-ball 33. With wickets falling at the other end, Rizwan kept the fight going. But in the 12th over of the chase, Rizwan was dismissed by Ish Sodhi.

However, Asif Ali and Shoaib Malik kept a cool head and finished the job for the Pakistan side. While Ali scored 27* off 12 deliveries, Malik helped himself to a 20-ball 26*.

With the ball, Ish Sodhi was the pick of the bowlers. The leg spinner scalped 2 wickets in his 4 overs and gave away 28 runs. Apart from Sodhi, Trent Boult, Tim Southee, and Mitchell Santner picked up a wicket each.

New Zealand batted first and posted a total of 134/8 on the board. None of the New Zealand batsmen could cross the 30-run mark, as the Pakistan bowlers kept picking up wickets at regular intervals. Daryl Mitchell and Devon Conway scored 27 each for the Kiwis, while skipper Kane Williamson chipped in with a 26-ball 25.

Haris Rauf was outstanding with the ball in hand. The right-arm pacer picked up 4 wickets in his 4-over spell and gave away 22 runs in the process. Apart from Rauf, the likes of Shaheen Afridi, Imad Wasim, and Mohammad Hafeez picked up a wicket each. With this win, the Pakistan side has moved to the top of the points table in Group 2, while New Zealand are placed at the 4th spot.

South Africa coast past the West Indies with 8 wickets to spare

Earlier in the day, the South African side breezed past the West Indies outfit. Wielding the willow first, the West Indies posted a total of 143/8 on the board. Opener Evin Lewis top-scored for the defending champions with an attacking 35-ball 56.

Apart from Lewis, Kieron Pollard also scored a handy 26 off 20 deliveries. Dwaine Pretorius prized out 3 willow wielders with the ball, while Keshav Maharaj scalped 2 wickets.

In reply, the South African batsman broke no sweat. Even though the Proteas lost their skipper Temba Bavuma early, Reeza Hendricks, Rassie van der Dussen and Aiden Markram contributed valuable runs to seal the job for South Africa.

Hendricks scored 39 off 30 deliveries, while van der Dussen helped himself to a 51-ball 43*. Aiden Markram scored a whirlwind 51* off just 26 deliveries as South Africa breezed past the target with 8 wickets to spare. South Africa are now occupying the 4th spot in the points table, while West Indies are placed at the last place.
