The ICC World Twenty20 was first held in 2007. It was first decided that every two years an ICC World Twenty20 tournament is to take place, except in the event of an ICC Cricket World Cup being scheduled in the same year, in which case it will be held the year before. The first tournament was in 2007 in South Africa where India defeated Pakistan in a dramatic final. This inaugural World T20 was a huge success and set the benchmark for T20 cricket. The Dutch have played 10 matches at the global event and registered 4 wins and 6 losses. The 2009 edition was full of surprise victories, as favourites fell at the hands of underdogs. The hosts, England, were embarrassed by Netherlands in a final-ball thriller at the Home of Cricket, Lord’s. In 2014, Netherlands blazed into the main draw by chasing 190 in 13.5 overs against Ireland and making the most of the opportunity by again stunning England, who were already out of the running. The team’s other win was against UAE in the same edition in Bangladesh.

Another team that has produced world class T20 cricketers over the years however never won the World T20 is South Africa. The team has played 26 matches and registered 16 wins and 10 defeats. In the 2009 semi-final in Nottingham, the Proteas had a great chance to reach the final however lost the match against the eventual champions Pakistan by just 7 runs. The team reached the semi-final in the previous edition in 2014 however a Virat Kohli special knocked it out of the competition.

Pakistan has generally done well in World T20. After losing the final in 2007, the Asian giants lifted the cup in England by defeating Sri Lanka. In 2010, the team was on its way to a third successive final however a Mike Hussey special rocked it in the semi-final. Pakistan reached the semi-final in 2012 however lost to hosts Sri Lanka. 2014 is the only time the team failed to reach the semis. <p>The African side has played 10 matches at the global event and registered 4 wins and 6 losses. The team has defeated Hong Kong (2016), Netherlands (2014) and UAE (2014) however their most stunning win was against the mighty Australians in 2007. In one of the biggest upsets in the history of the competition, the Aussies batted first and were restricted to 138/9 by the determined Zimbabweans. In reply, opener Brendan Taylor’s classy 60 not out off 45 balls anchored his team to a historic win. His knock included 4 fours and 2 sixes.</p>

<p>The Dutch have played 10 matches at the global event and registered 4 wins and 6 losses. The 2009 edition was full of surprise victories, as favourites fell at the hands of underdogs. The hosts, England, were embarrassed by Netherlands in a final-ball thriller at the Home of Cricket, Lord’s. In 2014, Netherlands blazed into the main draw by chasing 190 in 13.5 overs against Ireland and making the most of the opportunity by again stunning England, who were already out of the running. The team’s other win was against UAE in the same edition in Bangladesh.</p>
<h4><strong>8. England- 11:</strong></h4>

<p>England has registered 11 wins and 14 losses while one match has registered in no result from their 26 appearances. The team’s most memorable outing was in the Caribbean in 2010. England proved the surprise package in this edition, winning their first major limited-overs trophy with a comprehensive victory over Australia in the final. England has some fine T20 players in the 2016 squad and will look to do the same in India.</p>
<h4><strong>7. New Zealand- 11:</strong></h4>

<p>The Kiwis have played 25 matches and registered 11 wins, 12 losses and 2 ties. In the inaugural edition in 2007, the team’s progress was stopped in the semi-final by Pakistan. In the next edition in England, the team failed to reach the semi-finals. This was again the case in the next three editions in 2010, 2012 and 2014. The team has had some of the finest T20 cricketers over the years, however, have failed to impress when it matters the most in crunch situations. The Kiwis have sent a strong squad to India that will look to make a mark and improve this record.</p>
<h4><strong>6. West Indies- 12:</strong></h4>

<p>The powerful West Indians have played 25 matches and registered 12 wins. The team has experienced 11 defeats, 1 tie and 1 no result. The 2012 edition in Sri Lanka heralded West Indies’ resurgence in the global game as they danced their way to a first World title since 1979. Amid the Gangnam and Gayle force, the most abiding image of the event was the Caribbean boys dusting away at Marlon Samuels to enhance the lustre of one of the best T20 performances &#8211; 78 of 56 to revive his side and 1 for 15 to seal victory in the final.</p>
<h4><strong>5. Australia- 14:</strong></h4>

<p>The Aussies have played 25 matches and won on 14 occasions. The team has experienced 11 defeats and some of these have been in the knockout matches including a final in 2010. By their lofty standards, Australia has underachieved at the World T20s. The fact that this event is the only major piece of cricketing silverware that they’ve yet to win has been well-documented. This has remained the case despite Australia being home to a host of proven, world-class T20 players as well the emergence of the Big Bash League in recent years.</p>
<h4><strong>4. South Africa- 16:</strong></h4>

<p>Another team that has produced world class T20 cricketers over the years however never won the World T20 is South Africa. The team has played 26 matches and registered 16 wins and 10 defeats. In the 2009 semi-final in Nottingham, the Proteas had a great chance to reach the final however lost the match against the eventual champions Pakistan by just 7 runs. The team reached the semi-final in the previous edition in 2014 however a Virat Kohli special knocked it out of the competition.</p>
<h4><strong>3. India- 17:</strong></h4>

<p>India won the inaugural edition in 2007 and became the home of T20 cricket by introducing the IPL. The team has played 28 matches and registered 17 wins. It has experienced 9 defeats, 1 tie and 1 no result. India played poorly in 2009, 2010 and 2012 and failed to qualify for the semis. In 2014, the team came back strongly and reached the final in Dhaka before being outclassed by the Sri Lankans. India has been in tremendous form in recent times and is certainly the favourites to lift the cup in 2016 at home.</p>
<h4><strong>2. Pakistan- 18:</strong></h4>

<p>Pakistan has generally done well in World T20. After losing the final in 2007, the Asian giants lifted the cup in England by defeating Sri Lanka. In 2010, the team was on its way to a third successive final however a Mike Hussey special rocked it in the semi-final. Pakistan reached the semi-final in 2012 however lost to hosts Sri Lanka. 2014 is the only time the team failed to reach the semis. Pakistan’s recent form has been poor and it is likely to suffer another disappointing campaign in India. The team has won 18, lost 11 and tied 1 match out of the 30 it has played in.</p>
<h4><strong>1. Sri Lanka- 21:</strong></h4>

<p>The islanders have been the most consistent and successful team in World T20. Barring the 2007 edition where it failed to reach the semis, the other editions have witnessed a strong show from the team. In 2009, Sri Lanka lost a closely fought final against Pakistan. Eventual winners England beat the team in 2010. At home in 2012, the Lankans were defeated by a determined West Indian side and, in particular, a Marlon Samuels special which is arguably the one of the finest World T20 knocks ever. The team finally lifted the trophy in 2014 by defeating India in Dhaka.</p>
