Women’s cricket was often disregarded before this year. The calendar year 2017 unfolded in a miraculous manner for the female cricket. There have been several attempts to showcase the talent that women cricketers possess but the game does not attract viewers. Women’s cricket got a lot of attention when Cricket Australia (CA) introduced the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL).

The rise of women’s cricket in India has been incredible over the years, from being disregarded to having huge screens and crowd gatherings to witness the women’s world cup final. 2017 witnessed some of the finest women cricketers like Harmanpreet Kaur, Jhulan Goswami, Smriti Mandhana, Mithali Raj earning a name for themselves. India went on to reach the final of the 2017 WWC in England before collapsing against the hosts. This gave a new dimension to women’s cricket in India.

Mithali gets the reward

On Thursday, Mithali Raj was awarded a cheque for Rs 1 crore and 600 square yards of land in Banjara Hills by the Telangana government for her achievements on the cricket ground. State sports minister T. Padma Rao Goud, sports secretary Burra Venkatesham and Sports Authority of Telangana State chairman Allipuram Venkateshwar Reddy awarded the cheque and land documents at the Secretariat Conference Hall on Thursday. Mithali Raj – Tendulkar of women’s cricket?

Mithali Raj reached the landmark of 6000 runs in one-day internationals and became the only woman to surpass the milestone in women’s cricket. Mithali led team India to the finals of the women’s world cup on two occasions, once in 2005 and then in 2017. She is also known as the Tendulkar of women’s cricket for her heroics. The 35-year-old impressed one and all with her batting when her career began at the age of 17 and since then she has never looked back.

The story of how Mithali started playing cricket is fascinating, her father recalls the time when he wanted her to wake up early which prompted him to send Mithali into a cricket academy. The Indian skipper has worked hard since then and it is her hard work which has led her to the position she is at today.
