Prithvi Shaw is set to make his Test debut in the first of the two-match Test series against the Windies at the SCA Stadium in Rajkot starting on Thursday. The youngster has played no more than two years at the senior level but his name has been reverberating in cricket circles ever since 2010 when he was only 11. The Thane-born cricketer has gained stature for his stroke-play and his attacking instincts. These helped him to gain success at the U19 level, in first-class cricket and also in the IPL.

Here are ten interesting facts about the 18-year-old Test debutant of India:

1. Birth:

Prithvi Pankaj Shaw was born on November 9, 1999, in Maharashtra’s Vihar. He is a right-hand bowler and an off-spinner.

2. Career in Mumbai:

Shaw was offered a contract by AAP Entertainment in 2010 allowing him and his family to move to Mumbai and continue his cricketing education.

3. A record knock:

In November 2013, Prithvi Shaw smashed 546 runs from 330 balls while playing for Rizvi Springfield in a Harris Shield match. It was the highest score by an Indian in organized cricket until Pranav Dhanawade made 1000*. Only two other players have scored more than Prithvi in an innings in any form of organized cricket.

4. England Tours:

Prithvi, well known for his stroke-play, was present in Manchester in April 2012, as part of an exchange programme. He played for Cheadle Hulme School in that tour where he scored over 1000 runs across two months. In 2014, he played for Cleethorpes in the Yorkshire ECB County Premier League.

5. Ranji Trophy:

Prithvi Shaw made his first-class debut while playing for Mumbai in the 2016/17 Ranji Trophy semi-final against Tamil Nadu. In the game played in Rajkot, Shaw scored a century in the 4th innings to become the second youngest to score a century for Mumbai.

Shaw was 17 years and 57 days when he scored his maiden ton while Sachin Tendulkar was 15 years and 230 days old. Later, he scored a fifty in the final against Gujarat to become the youngest to score a fifty in the Ranji Trophy final.

6. Duleep Trophy:

At the age of 17 years and 320 days, Prithvi Shaw became the youngest centurion in a Duleep Trophy final when he scored 154 on the opening day of the game for India Red against India Blue. He is also the second youngest player to score a hundred in Duleep Trophy after Sachin Tendulkar (17 years and 262 days).

7. U19 World Cup:

Prithvi Shaw led the Indian team which won the U19 World Cup title in 2018. He finished as the second highest run-getter for India and nine overall in the tournament. Shaw scored 261 runs across five innings at an average of 65.25 including two fifties.

8. IPL record:

Shaw became the youngest player to open the batting in an IPL game when he made his debut for DD against KXIP at the age of 18 and 165 days.

A few days later, Shaw notched up his maiden IPL fifty against the KKR and became the joint youngest player to score an IPL fifty. He shared the record along with Sanju Samson as both were 18 years and 169 days old when they scored their maiden IPL fifty.

Prithvi scored at least one century in all the four innings in first-class cricket thus far. Only three players younger to him have completed this set including Tendulkar.

10. Test Debut:

Prithvi is set to make his debut in the first Test at the SCA in Rajkot, the same venue where he made his FC debut. He will be the second youngest Indian to open the innings on Test debut after Vijay Mehra who was 17 years and 265 days old.
