Former South Africa captain Faf du Plessis won’t be taking further part in the ongoing edition of the Men’s Hundred. The veteran was set to play for the Northern Superchargers, but he failed to recover in time from the concussion that he suffered two months ago during the 2021 Pakistan Super League.

While playing for the Quetta Gladiators, Faf collided with his teammate Mohammad Hasnain near the boundary. He was thereafter ruled out of the tournament after which he quarantined in Croatia before the Hundred. Imari Visser, the cricketer’s wife, also showed concerns for her husband.

In the last two months, du Plessis hasn’t played any form of cricket. The 37-year-old was initially withdrawn from the Supercharger’s first three games, but he couldn’t attain the desired fitness in time.

Dane Vilas will continue playing as his replacement in the Hundred. On Friday, August 13, Faf dropped a post on Instagram, saying that he’s returning home and talked about taking part in the 2021 Caribbean Premier League, which gets underway on August 26.

Faf du Plessis to continue his rehab

“I’m really so grateful for all the support through this difficult injury and feel like I’m very close to playing again,” du Plessis was quoted as saying in ESPNcricinfo.

“Faf du Plessis will return to South Africa to continue his rehab from the concussion he suffered at the PSL earlier this year. Dane Vilas will continue as his replacement at Northern Superchargers for the remainder of the competition,” the Superchargers said in a statement.

The Superchargers are currently placed fourth in the table with seven points from as many matches. In their previous game, they beat the Manchester Originals by 69 runs.

However, they need to beat the Birmingham Phoenix in their last group match to have any chance of qualifying for the playoffs. The Phoenix are the current table-toppers.

Harry Brook is currently their leading run-scorer, having notched 189 runs at an average of 47.25 and a strike rate of 153.65.

John Simpson and David Willey have also scored fifties for them. Adil Rashid is their leading wicket-taker with 12 scalps at an economy rate of 1.19.
