The Bangladesh cricket team was left shocked and frightened with the scenes they witnessed on Friday. When they went to a nearby mosque from the Stadium in Christchurch to offer their Friday prayers, all they could see was bloodshed and extreme violence. Terrorists decided to open fire at two mosques in Christchurch which accounted for at least 49 lives. The New Zealand Cricket (NZC) CEO feels that this will have far-reaching implications on the international sports being hosted in the country.

The Bangladesh team, that was in the close vicinity of the attack, narrowly escaped it. Even though the shootings weren’t aimed at the cricketers, David White, the CEO of NZC was also of the opinion that the impression of the country ‘being a safe haven is now gone’. He admitted that everything will change from now onwards.

This will change the entire fabric of international sports hosting

“This is shocking. This will change the entire fabric of international sports hosting. I think everything changes now,” White was quoted as saying by stuff.co.nz. He noted that they’d have a close look at their security arrangements. Moreover, he was very clear that the authorities and sporting organisations have to be very vigilant.

“We’ll certainly be having to look at our security in depth. I think the idea of New Zealand being a safe haven is gone now. We now have to be very, very vigilant – all the authorities and sporting organisations, absolutely,” he added.

White also mentioned that they were all shaken up and shocked like everyone else. He mentioned that New Zealand Cricket’s thoughts are with Christchurch and the people affected by the attack.

“They’re shaken up all right. They’re shocked like everyone else. New Zealand Cricket’s thoughts were with Christchurch and people affected by the shootings. We are shocked and appalled, as I’m sure all New Zealanders are,” White said concluding his statement.
