Since last year, there has been some talk regarding the title sponsor for the Indian Premier League. The bid to become the title sponsor of the cash-rich league always goes quite high, and a few years back, Vivo, a smartphone company had bagged the rights for a hefty price. However, last year their name was stripped out of the tournament.
This had happened after political tensions had risen between India and China. Vivo, as some might know, is a Chinese smartphone manufacturing company, which is under BBK Electronics. After the tensions at the Indo-China borders arose, there were great public sentimentn which had asked the Board of Control for Cricket in India to remove all the sponsors which were from China.
Initially, the BCCI didn’t take action to do away from Vivo as the title sponsor but eventually, they did it. New bidding was called as Dream11, an Indian company which mainly develops fantasy cricket games online, won the title sponsor’s rights. The 2020 IPL saw Dream11’s name being associated with the league in the UAE.
Dream11 had bagged the rights for INR 222 Crores in IPL 2020
However, at the time it was stated that Dream11 will get the title sponsor’s right just for one year. Unlike Vivo, Dream11 didn’t get to sign a multi-year deal with the BCCI. As the 2021 IPL comes closer and closer, it has been seen that Vivo is back as the title sponsors for the world’s biggest T20 league.
As the announcements regarding Vivo being back as the tournament’s title sponsor started floating on the internet, it was also seen that people on Twitter were not too fond of the decision of the BCCI to go back to Vivo. It seems unlikely for this moment that any other company will come in the picture to bag the rights. Here are some tweets which show that the Indians aren’t taking this too well:

Vivo had signed a deal with the BCCI for five years. The deal had stated that Vivo will pay BCCI a total of 2190 crore INR during the five years, which is around 440 crores INR each year. In comparison, Dream11 had bought the rights for last year by placing a bid of INR 222 crores. It has been revealed that Dream11 has to pay more than the amount which Vivo is offering, in order to keep the title sponsor’s right.
