Virat Kohli is currently captaining the Indian team in their first of the five-match Test series against England at Edgbaston in Birmingham. After restricting the home team to 287 runs, India found themselves in dire straits having lost half their side pretty early. Ben Stokes picked up Ajinkya Rahane and Dinesh Karthik in quick succession to set the cat amongst the pigeons in the Indian camp.

However, Kohli didn’t panic and carried on in his own merry way. By the 55th over, India had lost eight wickets with a trail of more than 100 ahead of them. The Indian skipper showed tremendous guts and notched his maiden ton on English soil in 172 deliveries. The Delhi-born cricketer farmed the strike with the likes of Mohammed Shami, Ishant Sharma and Umesh Yadav as his batting partners.

Kohli marches on to maul England

The 29-year old eventually went on to score 149 runs from 225 balls and his knock was carved with 22 boundaries and a whack into the stands off left-arm seamer Sam Curran, who picked up a four-wicket-haul in only his second Test. Adil Rashid, the leg-break bowler who made a controversial comeback into the English Test team, accounted for the wicket of Kohli.

India, from being in a precarious position, ended up conceding a lead of only 13 runs. Ravichandran Ashwin picked up Alastair Cook’s wicket to end the visiting team’s day on a high. Meanwhile, Tom Moody, the former Australian cricketer, hailed Kohli as a ‘champion’ and praised his grit and application while weaving his magic with the willow.

He took to Twitter and wrote, “Virat Kohli doing what all true champions do, making you pay for error. That aside you’ll do well to see a better test, pure grit and a bucketload of skill. #fiercecompetitor #ENGvIND”
