Tom Westley, Essex’s newest star was included in the Tests against South Africa and West Indies. He played five Test matches for England this summer and played along with his county teammate Alastair Cook. Westley failed to impress and collected just 193 runs in 9 innings at an average of 24 runs per innings. After a dismal time with the national side, Westley was hoping for a good showing in the County Championship.

Westley started the County Championship extremely well but failed to capitalize on it. He has been fairly quiet in the second half of the season. The 28-year-old was hoping to fly to Australia for the Ashes but has been excluded from the squad. However, the newcomer is positive that he will score runs and come back into the England squad.

Westley looks beyond Ashes

After missing out on the plane to Ashes, Westley is planning for a national comeback. He has not been prolific with the run scoring in the recent games and that has cost him his place in the side. However, the youngster is looking forward to doing well and get back into the side.

He said, “I’ve said all along that it’s about scoring the runs at any level. I haven’t been scoring the runs I would have liked in the second half of the season. I started the season quite strong but all I can do is score runs and put my name in contention for some stage in the future.”

While talking about his England stint Tom said that it was surreal to play for the national team. He said, “It was a dream come true to play for my country. It was strange to an extent because I was away from the Essex team have been here for so many years.”

Essex has gone the whole county season unbeaten as they ended the season with a thumping victory over Yorkshire. Westley was over the moon and said, “It was great to win both of those Test series with England. And now winning the County Championship, and going unbeaten with Essex, is the icing on top of the cake for me.”
