Australia women continued their dominance in world cricket and clinched their seventh World Cup title. The Women in Yellow thrashed the defending champions England by 71 runs in the final match played at Hagley Oval, Christchurch on April 3 (Sunday). England were no match for the Aussies in all three departments, as the champions remained unbeaten throughout the tournament.

England skipper Heather Knight after winning the toss invited Australia to have a bat first. On the back of opener Alyssa Healy (170 off 138 balls), Rachael Haynes (68 off 93 balls), and Beth Mooney (62 off 47 balls)  Australia piled up a mammoth total of 356 runs in their allotted 50 overs. Apart from these three batters, none of the other Australian batters were able to have a big say during the innings.

For England, pacer Anya Shrubsole was the pick of the bowlers, grabbing three wickets in her ten-over quota and giving away only 46 runs. Apart from Shrubsole, the leading wicket-taker in the tournament, Sophie Ecclestone managed to get a wicket. However, the left-arm spinner was very expensive giving 71 runs in her ten over quota. None of the other bowlers managed to get a wicket for their side.

Natalie Sciver was the lone warrior for England

Chasing a big total of 357 runs, the defending champions had the worst possible start as they lost their star openers Danielle Wyatt (4 off 5 balls) and Tammy Beaumont (27 off 26 balls) within the field restrictions. Batter Natalie Sciver and skipper Heather Knight (26 off 25 balls) stitched a handy partnership of 48 runs before Knight was scalped by the leg-spinner Alana King. Despite Sciver looking good at one end, England kept losing wickets at regular intervals.

Amy Jones (20 off 18 balls), Sophia Dunkley (23 off 22 balls) and Katherine Brunt (1 off 4 balls) failed to form a solid partnership with Sciver, as the defending champions were slowly moved towards a defeat. Sciver and Charlie Dean (21 off 24 balls) formed a fighting partnership for the defending champions. However, as soon as Dean got out, it was curtains for England. Sciver played an excellent knock and remained unbeaten on 148 runs off 121 balls, as mighty Australians went on to win their record seventh World Cup title.
