Mayank Agarwal has been one of the most consistent batsmen in the Indian domestic circuit. However, despite his stupendous performances, he has been overlooked by the national selectors. He didn’t get an opportunity during India’s tour of South Africa earlier this year. Nevertheless, he was blessed with a lucrative deal by Kings XI Punjab in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Unfortunately, he didn’t quite perform to expectations and couldn’t feature in the lineup on a consistent basis. But the indifferent performances didn’t fizzle out the enthusiasm from him by any stretch of the imagination. He was picked to play for India ‘A’ in the first-class and limited-overs series on English soil. The 27-year-old didn’t disappoint and kept piling on runs.

Agarwal will warm the benches in Rajkot

Unfortunately, he was yet again ignored, this time in India’s Test series against England, which Virat Kohli’s men eventually lost 1-4. MSK Prasad, the national chief selector, mentioned that Agarwal will get his opportunity, which must have come as a relieving news for the swashbuckling batsman. Thereafter, the right-hander played for India ‘B’ in the triangular series and scored 229 runs in three matches.

In the Vijay Hazare Trophy, the Karnataka-born cricketer notched 112 runs in three counters. The performances didn’t elude the eyes of the selectors and he got his maiden call-up in India’s two-match Test series against Windies. Nonetheless, he won’t be featuring in the opening Test, starting tomorrow at Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Rajkot.

Prithvi Shaw, who was a part of the Indian Test squad in England, is all set to make his debut and is likely to open the batting with KL Rahul. In the meantime, Twitter is definitely not happy with Agarwal being sidelined for the 12-man squad, which was announced after today’s press conference.
