Mayank Agarwal has been one of the most consistent batsmen in the Indian domestic circuit. However, despite his stupendous performances, he has been overlooked by the national selectors. He didn’t get an opportunity during India’s tour of South Africa earlier this year. Nevertheless, he was blessed with a lucrative deal by Kings XI Punjab in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
Unfortunately, he didn’t quite perform to expectations and couldn’t feature in the lineup on a consistent basis. But the indifferent performances didn’t fizzle out the enthusiasm from him by any stretch of the imagination. He was picked to play for India ‘A’ in the first-class and limited-overs series on English soil. The 27-year-old didn’t disappoint and kept piling on runs.
Agarwal will warm the benches in Rajkot
Unfortunately, he was yet again ignored, this time in India’s Test series against England, which Virat Kohli’s men eventually lost 1-4. MSK Prasad, the national chief selector, mentioned that Agarwal will get his opportunity, which must have come as a relieving news for the swashbuckling batsman. Thereafter, the right-hander played for India ‘B’ in the triangular series and scored 229 runs in three matches.
In the Vijay Hazare Trophy, the Karnataka-born cricketer notched 112 runs in three counters. The performances didn’t elude the eyes of the selectors and he got his maiden call-up in India’s two-match Test series against Windies. Nonetheless, he won’t be featuring in the opening Test, starting tomorrow at Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Rajkot.
Prithvi Shaw, who was a part of the Indian Test squad in England, is all set to make his debut and is likely to open the batting with KL Rahul. In the meantime, Twitter is definitely not happy with Agarwal being sidelined for the 12-man squad, which was announced after today’s press conference.
Here is how Twitter reacted
Never ever understand this selections from Indian Team Management! Prithvi Shaw gets maiden call up ahead of Mayank Agarwal is Bizarre! What are you showing up for the ones who take Domestic seriously? Struggle? #INDvWI

Harsh on Mayank Agarwal. Considering that Mayank is 27 and Shaw is 18 who probably will be India's future when Kohli retires, Mayank's selection looks enforced.

Seriously @BCCI what else does mayank Agarwal has to do, built player morale rather than frustrating and destroying it. Karun, mayank creating example of destroying player morale
— KRIPAL NAIR (@kripalnair) October 3, 2018
Not really. Shaw is only 19. His time will come. Mayank Agarwal has been consistent and deserves a chance.

Disappointed to see Mayank Agarwal miss out, but I'm not surprised. He will hopefully be selected for the next Test #INDvWI

Again there is no justice #MayankAgarwal #INDvWI

After Karun Nair's sad and insulting departure from the side, now Prithvi Shaw has been handed over the debut cap instead of Mayank Agarwal.
I admire Shaw but there needs to be certain level of clarity on how the team is picked. #Indiancricketteam #BCCI— बाबा वेलण्ठनाथ| (@velawrites_in) October 3, 2018
They even overlooked Mayank Agarwal much more established and experienced player than Shaw.

Lets not forget that on the basis of stats….. Mayank Agarwal should be in b4 Shaw…with malice towards none

Mayank Agarwal has scored more runs than Prithivi Shaw in Domestic & Practice matches, They why he is out of Rajkot Test ?? @BCCI 😠#INDvWI

Prithvi Shaw ahead of Mayank Agarwal. Shardul ahead of Siraj. Mumbai lobby Zindabad! #INDvWI

What's wrong in giving a chance to Mayank Agarwal? First the selectors ignore Karun Nair and now Agarwal doesn't even make the XII. He'd rather play domestic cricket again than warm the bench!

Haha, I knew it. Team Management preffering Prithvi Shaw over Mayank Agarwal. Can't say anything now. Poor Mayank! 😕#INDvWI

I know, but man in form should always get the chance. Feel for Mayank Agarwal and Hanuma Vihari also. They have been ousted for outperforming the seniors?

Prithvi Shaw to make his debut for India in Rajkot. While it is great for the teenager, it will further dent Mayank Agarwal's confidence who has not been named in the XII. #INDvWI

Prithvi Shaw scored 8 and Mayank Agarwal scored 90 in BPXI vs WI, still Mayank not selected
