The ICC Champions Trophy will commence from 1st of June and England is set to be the host of the elite tournament. But before that, they are hosting the team that is ranked ‘Numero Uno’ in the ICC ODI Team Rankings. South Africa played against England on Wednesday at Headingley, Leeds. Winning the toss. Mr.360° AB de Villiers decided to give his bowling unit an opportunity first.
England lost their star opener, Jason Roy, early. But Alex Hales and Joe Root played brilliantly to recover from the early loss. It was then skipper’s turn. Eoin Morgan showed his class and elegance by playing a magnificent knock. He scored 107 runs in just 93 balls, hitting 7 fours and 5 sixes. Moeen Ali continued the fireworks. In the fag end of the innings, he scored a quickfire 77 in just 51 balls. Valiant efforts from Ali helped England post a massive total of 339 after 50 overs.
Like England, South Africa too lost their star opener early. Quinton de Kock went back to the dressing room after scoring only five runs. But again, Hashim Amla and Faf du Plessis played brilliantly. Amla scored 73 runs from 76 deliveries while Faf scored 67 runs from just 61 deliveries. They had put up a 112 run partnership. But after Amla and Faf’s dismissal, the South African batters lost their way. Skipper AB de Villers scored a handy 45 from 38 balls, but it was not enough as he begged for support from teammates. But that was never arriving, as Jean-Paul Duminy, David Miller and Chris Morris did not contribute much to the team’s cause.
The Kolkata Knight Riders’ (KKR) all-rounder in the Indian Premier League (IPL), Woakes was the best bowler for England on Thursday. In his 8 overs, he gave away just 38 runs and picked up four wickets. Moeen Ali was given the Man of the Match award for his all-round contributions. The Twitterati did not disappoint us, as they once again shared their thoughts and feelings regarding the game on Twitter.
