Australia ended their historic tour of Pakistan on a high note, clinching the one-off T20I by three wickets. Momentum enjoyed a rollercoaster ride throughout the game and the proceedings went right down to the wire. However, contributions from multiple batters ensured the visitors chased down 163 with five balls to spare at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore.

Earlier in the match, Australia won the toss and opted to bowl. Like the preceding ODI series, the visitors had to field a second-stringed XI with several prominent names being unavailable. Meanwhile, Pakistan got off to a brilliant start with openers Mohammad Rizwan and Babar Azam continuing their sensational run in white-ball cricket.

While Rizwan was out for 23, skipper Azam made a fluent 46-ball 66. Cameos from Khushdil Shah and Usman Qadir meant Pakistan posted 162/8 in their allotted 20 overs. Nathan Ellis was the pick of the Aussie bowlers, taking four wickets. In reply, the Aussies got off to a flying start with openers Travis Head and Aaron Finch attacking bowlers from the outset.

Australia crossed the line in seesaw chase

Like his counterpart in the game, Finch also went on to slam a half-century. While Head and Josh Inglis scored 26 and 24 respectively, Marnus Labuschagne and Cameron Green failed to come to the party. Nonetheless, a nine-ball 23-run cameo from Marcus Stoinis brought the required run rate down in no time. Ben McDermott, who remained unbeaten on 22, eventually finished off the proceedings off the first ball of the final over, taking the Aussies to a three-wicket win.

Winning skipper Finch was mighty pleased with his side’s efforts as he reckons Australia have formed a formidable contingent of white-ball players for the upcoming World Cups. “It certainly was, the way our bowlers attacked after the start they got, such an inexperienced attack as well was fantastic,” said Finch in the post-match conversation.

“Nathan Ellis came back well after a rough start which showed his character. Really good sign of things to come for our white-ball team. Everything we do will be with one eye on the World Cup – both in the T20 format and the ODIs,” he added.

Meanwhile, let’s look at how Twitter reacted to Australia’s triumph:
