The Sydney Thunder side started its campaign in the 2021 edition of the Big Bash League (BBL) with a comprehensive 7-wicket victory over the Brisbane Heat side. Chasing a target of 141 for victory, the Sydney Thunder side was reduced to 32/3.
However, Alex Ross and Sam Billings displayed remarkable composure to help their side past the finish line. While Ross scored an attacking 61* off 46 deliveries, Billings scored a valuable 45*.
With the ball, Liam Guthrie was the pick of the bowlers for the Brisbane Heat outfit. Even though he was on the expensive side, Guthrie picked up a couple of wickets. Apart from Guthrie, Xavier Bartlett picked up a solitary scalp.
Ben Duckett and Sam Heazlett help Brisbane Heat to 140/8
Batting first, the Brisbane Heat side was reduced to 16/2. But then, the duo of Ben Duckett and Sam Heazlett steadied the ship and forged a superb partnership of 83 runs for the 3rd wicket.
While Duckett scored a classy 46 off 35 deliveries, Heazlett helped himself to a calm 37-ball 42. Xavier Bartlett then played a good cameo lower down the order, contributing 26* off 18 deliveries.
Daniel Sams was outstanding with the ball for the Sydney Thunder side. The left-arm seamer bagged a three-wicket haul, and also leaked only 22 runs in the 4 overs that he bowled. Apart from Sams, the likes of Gurinder Sandhu and Nathan McAndrew also picked up 2 wickets apiece.
After this crushing victory over the Brisbane Heat side, the Thunder outfit has moved to the second place in the points table. The Thunder outfit will next take on the Melbourne Stars on 10th December 2021, while the Brisbane Heat side will next lock horns with the Perth Scorchers on 8th December 2021.

Sydney Thunders beat Brisbane Heat at Manuka Oval with 7 Wickets. It's only 4th win for Thunders against Heat.#BBL11 https://t.co/tqSQOGx2LF pic.twitter.com/Pps7S68RW1

What a victory for the Sydney Thunder. From reeling at 30 odd for 3 to comprehensively chasing it down. A well built partnership by Ross and Billings to steer the game away from Heat. Accelerated at the right time and batted maturely. Onto the next one.#BBL11 #ThunderNation

That's both Sydney teams off to a winning start in #BBL11 although the Sixers NRR of +7.6 is slightly superior.

Alex Ross and Sam Billings have brought a low-key game to life, but somehow it was fitting that the win came up off a wide. Thunder win with 17 balls to spare. #BBL11
