The 13th match of the Afghanistan Premier League (APL) between the Kandahar Knights and the Nangarhar Leopards was a low-scoring one. The pitch wasn’t a great one to bat on. The top order batsmen of both the teams struggled and couldn’t get amongst the runs.

However, it was the Knights bowlers who outshined the oppositions’ bowlers to emerge victorious. Also, this is the first win of the season in five games for the Kandahar Knights. Their semi-final hopes are still alive but a lot has to go their way if they are to get through. Karim Janat, who bailed the Knights out of extremely tough situations was the ‘Man of the Match’.

Mujeeb Ur Rahman runs through the top order of the Knights

Asghar Afghan, the skipper of Kandahar Knights opted to bat first after winning the toss. However, they had a nightmare of a start to their innings. The team was down to 27/5 in 7.4 overs. None of the top five batsmen managed to even reach the double figures. Four out of them didn’t even get to five runs.

At this stage, Riki Wessels, Najibullah, and Karim Janat played some sensible innings to help the team get to a respectable total. While the former two scored 22 and 24 runs respectively, the latter was unbeaten on 40 off 21 balls. Along with Shirzad, Janat put together an unbeaten 62-run partnership for the ninth wicket to take the team to 136 in 20 overs. Mujeeb picked four wickets in the innings.

The Leopards over-cautious chase unsuccessful

The Nangarhar Leopards lost two of their main batsman early in the chase. While Devcich got out for a duck, his partner Johnson Charles was out for 7 runs. The side was brought down to 27/3 with some combined efforts from the bowlers. However, wicketkeeper Shafiqullah broke free and quickly piled on 23 off 9 balls.

But, after he fell, the rest of the batsmen failed to score runs quickly. This kept the pressure mounting and the Knights’ bowlers kept chipping in with regular wickets. They were bundled out for just 110 runs in the 20th over and lost the game by 26 runs. While Waqar Salamkheil picked three wickets, Karim Janat and Mohammad Naveed picked two wickets each.

The Kandahar Knights fans were overjoyed with this win after having to wait for so long. Twitterati praised Karim Janat for his all-round heroics in the game.
