Bangladesh put forth a spirited show in Christchurch, showing that they are no pushovers. But on Friday, Tamim Iqbal and Co failed to perform to expectations and lost the three-match ODI series against New Zealand 0-3. The Black Caps won the final game by 164 runs at the Basin Reserve in Wellington to complete the clean sweep. The hosts returned empty-handed, at least in the ODIs.
Conway, Mitchell show their class
After electing to bat first, the Kiwis found themselves in a bit of strife after Martin Guptill, Henry Nicholls, and Ross Taylor perished without contributing much. Tom Latham, the second match’s centurion, got out cheaply as well. With the home team’s score at 120/4, Bangladesh would have smelled blood. But the duo of Devon Conway and Daryl Mitchell came out firing on all cylinders.
They put on 159 for the fifth wicket off 24.1 overs. Conway fell prey to Mustafizur Rahman, but by then, the left-hander had already notched a 110-ball 126 with 17 fours. Mitchell, on the other hand, completed his ton off 92 balls in the last ball of the hosts’ innings. For Bangladesh, Rubel Hossain was the most successful as he picked the three wickets of Guptill, Ross Taylor, and James Neesham.
Mahmudullah- Bangladesh’s lone warrior
In their run-chase, the Tigers couldn’t garner any sort of momentum. Matt Henry removed their top-three in the first seven overs after which New Zealand didn’t look back. Liton Das and Mushfiqur Rahim scored in the 20s, but both couldn’t carry on and fetch a significant score under their belt.
For the Tigers, it was Mahmudullah, who showed some resilience, scoring 76 runs off 73 balls with six fours and four sixes. In the end, he ran out of partners as Bangladesh were bowled out for 154. James Neesham was impressive as he picked up five wickets apart from Henry’s four-wicket haul.
Tamim, the Bangladesh skipper, was a happy man. “Thought we started pretty well with the ball. But those two guys batted beautifully. Sometimes small things hurt you more. The catches, the run-outs. No doubt Black Caps played unbelievably well, but at the same time we didn’t play well,” he said.
Latham, on the other hand, was delighted to see his team complete the clean sweep. “We played really well. The goal was to win 3-0 and we managed to do that. The energy in the field today. Talk about guys stepping up in different situations and we did that today,” he stated.
Here’s how the netizens reacted to New Zealand’s win:
