The inexperienced West Indies could only better their 122 all out in the first ODI by 26 runs in the second game at the Shere Bangla National Stadium, Mirpur, Dhaka. For the home team, Bangladesh, it was thanks to Mehidy Hasan, who registered his career-best 4 for 25. After West Indies elected to bat first, it was once again Mustafizur Rahman, who got his side an early breakthrough in the form of Sunil Ambris. Squared up through a delivery running into him, Ambris lobbed the ball up to gully where Hasan took a sharp catch.

In a bid to bolster their batting order, West Indies handed a debut to top-order batsman Kjorn Ottley and while he looked settled during his 24 from 44, a double strike by Mehidy Hasan in the 13th over led to his end, as he holed out to Tamim Iqbal at extra cover. Only three balls later Joshua da Silva was cleaned up, having scored only 5 from 22.

Hasan’s four-for skittles Windies for 148

West Indies soon lost Andrew McCarthy, who was cleaned up after a failed attempt to slog-sweep as a tossed up delivery from Shakib al Hasan. The 39 for 4 took no time in becoming 41 for 5 as Kyle Mayers perished for a 9-ball duck, being run out courtesy of an impressive throw by Najmul Shanto. Jason Mohammed’s boundary-less 11 from 26 was ended by Shakib al Hassan too, as he pinned the skipper LBW through his renowned arm ball.

Reduced to 71 for 7 after Nkumrah Bonner (20 from 25) played on Hasan Mahmud’s length ball to his stumps, the end for the West Indies’ innings seemed imminent. However, Rovmann Powell showed some intent through his 41 from 66, as he added 32 with Alazarri Joseph (17 from 21) for the ninth wicket, ensuring that his team crossed the triple-figure mark. He then added 28 more for the last wicket with Akeal Hosein before being stumped off Hasan, as West Indies finished for 148.

An easy chase for Bangladesh

During the chase, Bangladesh looked in no rush as Liton Das and Tamim Iqbal added 30 for the opening wicket. It was Hosein who struck in the 6th over to trap Das (22 from 24) LBW to bring Najmul Shanto in the middle. Having scored a single run in the previous game, Shanto took his time in the middle as he added 47 for the second wicket with half-centurion Iqbal. Although, he could not build much upon the 17-run start that he got and picked Ottley at midwicket off Jason Mohammed.

Iqbal continued milking singles apart from hitting the odd boundary as he notched up his half-century, whereas, after a scratchy start on return, Shakib ensured to make full use of the opportunity, scoring a valuable 43 off 50 with four fours. Their 32-run third-wicket alliance came to an end in the 26th over, when Raymon Reifer induced an edge from Iqbal, which was pouched easily by wicketkeeper Joshua da Silva. Coming to replace Iqbal, Mushfiqur Rahim faced 25 deliveries for his 9, as he kept giving Shakib the strike for the majority part of their time in the middle.
