The 2nd ODI between England and Bangladesh at Mirpur on Sunday was an intense game which brought out the ugly side of Bangladesh cricket. Bangladesh was fighting for the series after inflicting a narrow loss in the opener. It was obvious for them to be upbeat about the contest and give their level best to beat the Englishmen. Emotions were running high and unfortunately, the hosts weren’t  able to control it.

England captain Jos Buttler was given a verbal send-off after he fell lbw to Taskin Ahmed for 57 to leave England 123-7 while chasing 239. The decision, which was originally given not out, was reviewed by the Bangladeshis and was overturned. Mashrafe & Co. looked animated and went overboard with the celebrations which directly mocked Buttler who was walking off the field.

This triggered tension between the two teams. Buttler exchanged some heated words with the opposition team players before going back. The umpires intervened in the confrontation which followed the dismissal as several fielders approached Buttler. After the match, Buttler’s deputy Ben Stokes also had an altercation with Bangladeshi opener Tamim Iqbal during the post-match handshakes.

Stokes later wrote on micro-blogging site Twitter: “Congrats to Bangladesh on the win tonight, they outplayed us, what I won’t stand for is someone putting a shoulder to my team-mate at handshakes.” Skipper Buttler also spoke about the incidents at the post-match presser. When asked why he lost his cool, he said: “Mainly just the way they celebrated by running towards me and giving me a bit of a send-off. But emotions were running high, they were obviously delighted to get the wicket, maybe I should have just walked away.”

Bangladesh captain Mashrafe Mortaza also admitted both teams went too far. “I don’t know who spoke to Buttler. I was focusing on the review that I took, and then I got excited by the decision,” he said. “Sometimes, a lot of things happen in the heat of the moment. But players from both sides should control themselves.” Match referee Javagal Srinath will now consider what action to take against those involved in the incidents. It can be safely assumed though that the third and final game of the series, which has now become the series decider, will be exciting to watch.
