The Rajshahi Kings were in dire requisite of a win prior to their match against Mushfiqur Rahim’s Chittagong Vikings at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chattogram. In the end, Mehidy Hasan Miraz’s team defeated the table-toppers by seven runs in a closely-fought encounter. Most importantly, they inch closer to qualifying for the next round in this edition’s Bangladesh Premier League (BPL).

Charles takes charge

The Vikings’ decision to bowl first backfired on them as the Kings racked up a massive 198 for five in 20 overs. Johnson Charles and the left-handed Soumya Sarkar added 50 runs in the mandatory powerplay to take Rajshahi off to a decent start. Khaled Ahmed struck first blood, dismissing Sarkar for 26. Laurie Evans joined Charles in the middle and the duo compiled together a stand of 70 runs from 53 deliveries.

Ahmed picked up his second wicket in the form of Evans, who threatened with a 29-ball 36. Charles brought up his fifty but was trapped plumb in front by Abu Jayed. Thereafter, Christiaan Jonker and Ryan ten Doeschate injected momentum into the innings in the death overs. Doeschate smacked four sixes to score 27 while the South African Jonker piled on 37 from 17 balls with one four and three sixes.

Chittagong huff and puff

Mohammad Shahzad went hammer and tongs to race away to 49 runs from 22 balls with three fours and five sixes. He fell prey to Mehidy Hasan. Cameron Delport perished after scoring only seven. Yasir Ali was in no mood to relax and he turned up with an impressive knock of 58 runs from 38 balls with seven fours and a couple of sixes. Mushfiqur Rahim scored 22 runs from 20 balls with a boundary and six each.

Left-arm spinner Arafat Sunny castled Yasir in the 14th over. Thereafter, Sikandar Raza pressed the accelerator and took his team with touching distance. In the last over, the Kings needed 13 runs and Mustafizur Rahman rattled Raza’s woodwork to dent the Kings’ hopes of a victory. The left-arm fast bowler picked up a couple of more wickets was also adjudged the Player of the Match and rightly so.
