Australia have comfortably defeated Pakistan in the ongoing ICC Women’s World Cup in New Zealand. The six-time champions didn’t have to fret much as the Women in Green were never going to match them up given the skills and form they had. Having said that, Pakistan gave a good account of themselves putting up a respectable total on the board only for Australia to chase it down with more than 15 overs to spare.
After being invited to bat first, Pakistan didn’t get off to a great start. Sidra Ameen, Nahida Khan, Omaima Sohail and Nida Dar were back in the hut in the first 13 overs itself. Pakistan were reeling at 44/4 at one stage but then the skipper Bismah Maroof and Aliya Riaz joined hands to carefully rebuild the innings.
The duo took their time and rotated the strike well. Australia’s bowlers, especially Alana King, were tight in their lines and lengths not allowing the opposition batter to free their arms. Moreover, Maroof and Aliya didn’t show any intent to go after the bowling too as they were keen on playing their full quota of 50 overs.
Both of them played sensibly and notched up their respective half-centuries. The brilliant partnership of 99 runs was finally broken by Nicola Carey in the 45th over even as Maroof continued in her merry way. Pakistan showed urgency in their run-scoring at the fag end of the innings and managed to post a total of 190 runs for the loss of six wickets. Their skipper remained unbeaten on a well-made 78 off 122 balls with 8 fours.
Healy leads the chase for Australia
Having posted 310 runs against England in their opening game, Australia would’ve backed themselves to chase this total down easily. And they did it with aplomb. The centurion from the last game, Rachael Haynes and her opening partner Alyssa Healy added 60 runs for the first wicket in only 10.3 overs before the former got out on 34. Meg Lanning came out and played like she was batting in the dressing room as well.
Another half-century stand followed between her and Healy who was batting exceptionally well finding her range at the right time. She smashed 72 off 79 deliveries with seven fours to her name. Healy had a great chance to notch up a World Cup hundred but she missed out due to Omaima Sohail dismissing her with only 38 runs needing to win.
Ellyse Perry and Beth Mooney got to spend much needed time in the middle then as the duo completed the formalities taking Australia home in the 35th over. This is Australia’s second win of the tournament while Pakistan has lost both their matches now.

Nine Australians have won 6 or more player of the match award in Women's ODIs now. Out of nine, two of them are yet to win a player of the series award.
