The ninth match of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 saw Royal Challengers Bangalore take on two-time champions Kolkata Knight Riders at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Thursday, April 6.

Bangalore won the toss, and Faf du Plessis elected to field first. Coming into bat, Kolkata got off to a decent start to their innings as Rahmanullah Gurbaz played a dashing knock and amassed 57 runs to his name. However, the rest of the top order could not amount to much. After the side seemed to crumble under pressure, the middle order came through.

Rinku Singh scored 46 runs to help the hosts in stabilising themselves. Shardul Thakur was the highest run-getter for Kolkata, as he accumulated 68 runs off just 29 deliveries. After the end of the first innings, the hosts posted 204 runs on the board. Compared to how they had started the game, the score of 204 was quite an improvement.

Kolkata’s spin attack overwhelms Bangalore

As the Faf du Plessis-led Bangalore came to chase the mammoth target, ace India batter Virat Kohli and skipper Du Plessis looked for a repeat of their previous game's performance. However, both fell prey to spinners.

Sunil Narine sent Kohli back to the pavilion at an individual score of 21, whereas Varun Chakravarthy dismissed Du Plessis for 23. Following the early dismissals of the openers, Michael Bracewell looked to stabilise the innings. However, the 32-year-old batter could not find a dependable batting partner as the wickets kept falling at the other end.

Glenn Maxwell, Harshal Patel, Shahbaz Ahmed, Dinesh Karthik, and Impact Player Anuj Rawat collectively scored 16 runs, and as the middle order of the side collapsed, the Nitish Rana-led Kolkata prevailed.

The hosts made excellent use of their Impact Player, Suyash Sharma, who was brought in and Venkatesh Iyer was subbed out. The 19-year-old took three wickets to further mount the pressure on an already struggling Bangalore side. The relentless bowling attack of Kolkata proved to be too much to handle for the visitors as Kolkata won the game by 81 runs.
