The 24th match of the ongoing Indian Premier League 2023 resulted in another thrilling finish as Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) chased Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at a ferocious rate but eventually failed to overtake them as CSK ultimately won the contest by 8 runs.
Batting first, Chennai Super Kings did what they are known to do the best at Bengaluru's M Chinnaswamy Stadium. Although an early wicket did shake the visitors a bit, the loss was quickly mended by the tested duo of Devon Conway and Ajinkya Rahane who together put up 74 runs for the second wicket in just 43 deliveries. Conway smashed an explosive 83 off just 45 deliveries as he hit the ball out of the park on six occasions while knocking it for fours an equal number of times. Rahane, on the other hand, scored 37 off just 20 deliveries with the help of three fours and two sixes.
The caravan was then carried forward by Shivam Dube who notched up a quickfire 52 in just 27 deliveries, smashing two fours and as many as five sixes. Moeen Ali then finished off the proceedings for CSK with a 9-ball-19-run knock. Riding on the power-packed performances of their batters, CSK posted a mammoth 226/6 in their allotted 20 overs. For RCB, all the bowlers who were trusted with the ball returned one wicket each.
Coming in to chase, RCB got off to a disastrous start as Virat Kohli was dismissed by Akash Singh in the very first over of the second innings. Things only worsened for RCB as Mahipal Lomror too, departed in the very next over as he mistimed Tushar Deshpande to hand a catch to Ruturaj Gaikwad. However, the show only started from there as skipper Faf du Plessis joined hands with Glenn Maxwell to shatter the CSK bowling unit. The duo took on every single bowler who was introduced into the attack to stitch a gallant 126-run partnership in just 61 deliveries.
While Maxwell hit eight sixes and three fours to notch up 76 runs off just 36 deliveries, du Plessis rode on five fours and four sixes to score 62 in 33 deliveries. Dinesh Karthik then exhibited a brisk cameo of 14-ball-28 which, however, failed to prove enough for the home team as RCB finished their innings on 218/8. With the win, CSK rose to the third position on the points table whereas RCB maintained their seventh place.
