Game 3 of the ongoing IPL (Indian Premier League) 2024 featured a clash between Kolkata Knight Riders and Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Saturday, March 23. The clash began with KKR coming in to bat first after losing the toss.

The side got off to a subpar start as opener Sunil Narine was sent packing on the score of two runs. However, his batting partner, Phil Salt, played a resilient knock, scoring 54 runs in 40 deliveries. 

After the openers, the rest of the middle order failed to impress. Venkatesh Iyer and Nitish Rana scored seven and nine runs, respectively. Skipper Shreyas Iyer departed for a duck, with Ramandeep Singh adding 35 runs on the board. 

Furthermore, Rinku Singh scored 23 runs, with Andre Russell playing a brilliant knock, scoring 64* runs in 25 deliveries, as Kolkata posted a total of 208 runs in the first innings. As for Hyderabad, T Natarajan was the highest wicket-taker, with three wickets to his name in the first innings. Mayank Markande took two wickets, with Pat Cummins taking one wicket as well. 

Heinrich Klaasen’s knock in vain as SRH fall short 

Aiming to chase down a target of 209 runs, Sunrisers Hyderabad got off to a good start as openers Mayank Agarwal and Abhishek Sharma scored 32 runs, each. Rahul Tripathi added 20 runs on the board, with Aiden Markram scoring 18 as well. 

The star of the show for Hyderabad was star batter Heinrich Klaasen. The 32-year-old played an exceptional knock, scoring 63 runs in 29 deliveries, with Abdul Samad adding 15 and Shahbaz Ahmed scoring 16. 

Hyderabad came within touching distance of chasing the mammoth target down but fell short in the final over. For Kolkata, Harshit Rana was the highest wicket-taker with three wickets to his name; Andre Russell took two wickets, with Varun Chakravarthy and Sunil Narine striking once as Hyderabad managed to score 204 runs, losing the game by four runs.
