Australia secured the three-match ODI series 2-0 after a thumping victory in the second ODI in Cairns. It was the bowlers who won the game for Australia, first with the bat in hand, and then with the ball.
Earlier in the game, New Zealand opted to bowl first. Aaron Finch’s horrid run with the bat continued as he was dismissed for a duck whereas David Warner, Marnus Labuschagne, and Marcus Stoinis, could not last long as Australia were sent on the backfoot straightaway, at 26 for 4. Steve Smith and Alex Carey tried to get a partnership going, until Mitchell Santner picked up Carey for 12.
While Smith was working it around, Glenn Maxwell played a good hand of a 25 off 50. Matt Henry came back for a spell, and got the better of Sean Abbott while Smith was dismissed for 61 off 94 to leave the hosts at 117/8 before the lower-order struck crucial partnerships and got Australia close to 200.
Lower-order step up for Australia
Mitchell Starc (38*), Adam Zampa (16) and Josh Hazlewood (23*), took the total to 195/9 as the visitors could not clean up the tail. The tremendous fight back left something for the Australian bowlers to have a go at New Zealand. Trent Boult was the pick of the bowlers again with 4/38 while Matt Henry picked up 3/33.
In reply, Martin Guptill was removed early by Mitchell Starc once again while Devon Conway steered one into the hands of the deep fine leg fielder. Tom Latham was out for a duck as Abbott was on the money straight away. Kane Williamson played a Test-kind of innings, scoring a 58-ball 17. But after all the hard work, he missed a full toss to be dismissed lbw by Zampa.
The remianing batters did not show much resistance as wickets kept falling at regular intervals and the visitors succumbed for 82 in 33 overs. Zampa (5/35) picked up his maiden five-wicket haul in ODIs while Starc and Abbott picked up two each.

Australia was 8-117, and then won by 113 runs... astonishing. The Chappell-Hadlee Trophy is theirs 🏆

Australian No. 11 Josh Hazlewood has scored more runs than Aaron Finch, David Warner, Marnus Labuschagne and Marcus Stoinis combined.#AUSvNZ

Not often do you take 5/35 and not get MOTM in an ODI #AUSvNZ

That's a sensational performance by Aus bowlers. First with the bat to get them to nearly 200 and then with the ball to suffocate NZ and then bowl them out for under 100. Bravo. #AusvNZ

A really poor display of cricket by Blackcaps. Batting was clueless. Bowling in powerplay was good but gave away too many crucial runs to the tailenders.

Hoping to end the series on a high on this Sunday.#BACKTHEBLACKCAPS #AUSvNZ pic.twitter.com/ZJwhG2sNpw

No surprises, you can trust @BLACKCAPS who are never really far away from oh-so-familiar meltdowns against @CricketAus. When you think the Aussies have batted poorly in 2nd ODI, the Kiwis go one up on them by batting even more poorly. Atrocious cricket all around!!! #AUSvNZ

Some handy runs with the bat and a fiery opening spell which set the tone for the win helps Mitchell Starc win the Player of the Match award 🔥🙌#Australia #NewZealand #AUSvNZ #CricketTwitter #MitchellStarc pic.twitter.com/ajhZAKSR5c
