To say that the second Test between India and South Africa, in Cape Town, has got off to an eventful start on Wednesday, January 3, would be a massive understatement.

After stand-in captain Dean Elgar won the toss and opted to bat, Mohammed Siraj bowled another one of his trademark new-ball spells that blew away the South African batting line-up. The right-arm pacer picked up six wickets, after bowling eight overs on the trot. Jasprit Bumrah and Mukesh Kumar also bagged a couple of wickets each, as the Proteas were bowled out for just 55.

The Indian fans would have breathed out a collective sigh of relief after the sensational bowling performance from their team. However, their nightmares from the Boxing Day Test in Centurion came back to haunt them as they were bowled out for 153 in just 34.5 overs.

The tourists were placed at a strong position at 105/2 at one point. However, the wickets of Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer fell in quick succession as India slipped to 110/4. Virat Kohli and KL Rahul joined forces to stitch a 43-run stand in 66 balls. However, the latter got dismissed against the run of play to start a forgettable 15-minute phase of play for India.

Lungi Ngidi dismissed Rahul, Ravindra Jadeja, and Jasprit Bumrah in the same over. In the following over from Kagiso Rabada, the well-set Kohli had to take the long walk back to the hut for a 59-ball 46. A huge miscommunication between Prasidh Krishna and Siraj led to a run out as the latter fell short of his crease. On the following delivery, Prasidh edged one to the left of Aiden Markram, who took a good catch, diving in front of first slip.

From 153/4 in 33.1 overs, India were bowled out without adding another run. The last six wickets fell in the space of just 11 balls. The tourists have a first-innings lead of 98, which could have been much more if not for the mind-boggling collapse. The troika of Rabada, Ngidi, and Nandre Burger finished with three wickets apiece.
