Chennai Super Kings booked their place in the final of IPL 2023 after they eased past reigning champions Gujarat Titans in front of their home crowd at Chepauk. Hardik Pandya's men were second best in the contest, especially in the batting department, as the CSK bowlers ended their side's losing streak against Titans.
The reigning champions, who were the first side to qualify for the playoffs, were bogged down by the CSK pacers in the powerplay. The pressure piled up on the visitors as Wriddhiman Saha fell in the third over of the chase in an attempt to break the shackles against Deepak Chahar.
The slow nature of the surface had started playing its tricks on the batters and Gujarat's chase got even tougher when skipper Hardik Pandya departed cheaply in the final over of the powerplay. Indian batting sensation Shubman Gill, who was holding the fort from one end, did not receive much support from Dasun Shanaka and David Miller.
However, Deepak Chahar landed the killer blow to Gujarat's hopes when he put an end to Gill's resistance. Chennai were all over the visitors, with the Titans clueless against the CSK spinners. GT's Rashid Khan provided a glimmer of hope with his breathtaking cameo, but it came a little too late for the visitors as the Yellow Army annihilated their opponents to complete a terrific victory.
Chennai Super Kings finish on a high after solid opening stand
Hardik Pandya's side has been one of the best chasing teams in the competition, and the Gujarat skipper decided to bowl first, backing his team's strength, despite the sluggish nature of the surface. Chennai's star opening duo of Ruturaj Gaikwad and Devon Conway thwarted the Titans' pacers to provide a solid start to the home side.
Gaikwad, who got a reprieve after Darshan Nalkande overstepped in just the second over of the match, took full advantage of the second life, hammering a brisk half-century in an 87-run stand for the first wicket. However, the reigning champions wrestled back the momentum with the wickets of Gaikwad and Shivam Dube in quick succession.
While Conway struggled for timing from the other end, the home side got some much-needed momentum in the middle overs, thanks to Ajinkya Rahane and Ambati Rayudu's blistering cameos. Even though there was no special show from the iconic MS Dhoni, Ravindra Jadeja and Moeen Ali's late riposte helped the Yellow Army to a challenging total on a turbulent surface.
