Australia finally made a comeback in the five-match T20I series against India as they beat them by five wickets in the third game on Tuesday, November 28 at Barsapara Cricket Stadium, Guwahati. After being put in to bat first, India posted a massive total of 222/3 in their allotted 20 overs. In reply, Australia chased down the target on the last ball of the match courtesy of a scintillating hundred by Glenn Maxwell (104* off 48).

Australia’s chase got off to a good start as openers Travis Head (35 off 18) and Aaron Hardie (16 off 12) added 47 runs for the first wicket off 26 balls. After a good start, Australia lost three wickets quickly and were left reeling at 68/3 after 6.2 overs.

Glenn Maxwell walked in at number four and kept Australia in the game with his sensational innings. He got good support from Matthew Wade (28* off 16) as the duo put on an unbeaten 91* run stand for the sixth wicket off just 40 balls to take their team home.

Earlier in the day, after being put in to bat first, India lost their opener Yashasvi Yashasvi Jaiswal (6 off 6) in the second over itself with just 14 runs on the board. The situation got worse for the hosts as Ishan Kishan also returned to the pavilion for a five-ball duck to leave India reeling at 24/2. After the two early blows, captain Suryakumar Yadav (39 off 29) and Ruturaj Gaikwad added 57 runs for the third wicket off 47 balls to stabilize the innings.

However, Suryakumar’s dismissal in the 11th over brought the pressure on Gaikwad to take the innings forward. The 26-year-old happily accepted the challenge and quickly shifted his gears. After scoring 21 off his first 21 balls, he quickly completed his fifty in the next 11 deliveries.

The Pune-born batter unleashed his wrath on the Australian bowlers in the death overs and brought up his hundred off just 52 balls. Gaikwad finished the innings with an unbeaten 123* off 57 balls smashing 13 fours and seven sixes in his innings. Courtesy of his innings, India posted a massive total of 222/3 in their allotted 20 overs. Jason Behrendorff was the pick of the bowlers for Australia with figures of 1/12 in four overs.
