The Gulf Giants registered a comprehensive 101-run victory over the Dubai Capitals in the eighth match of the International League (ILT20) 2023 at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium on Thursday, January 19. This massive win has helped the Giants leapfrog to the top in the points table having won all their opening three games so far.

The loss however, has pushed the Capitals down to the fourth position in the eight-team table and they need to work really hard to make amends from here on as the competition progresses.

While the bowlers tried their level best to restrict the Giants to a manageable total on a good batting surface, the Dubai-based franchise was completely let down by the batters who failed to showcase a collective performance in the second innings.

Dubai Capitals' skipper Rovman Powell won the toss and elected to bowl first. Despite losing opener Rehan Ahmed early, the duo of skipper James Vince and Chris Lynn added 82 runs for the second wicket. While Vince continued his purple patch, Lynn played a perfect second fiddle in this partnership scoring a run-a-ball 25.

James Vince went on to score a 48-ball 76 and Shimron Hetmyer added the finishing touch with an unbeaten 19-ball 37 as the Gulf Giants posted 181/6 on the board. Akif Raja (2/23) and Isuru Udana (2/41) were the pick of the bowlers for Dubai.

Dubai Capitals falter in their run chase

In reply, the Dubai Capitals’ famed batting line-up never got going and quick wickets derailed their chase right from the start. The Dubai batters failed to make the most of the shorter boundaries at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium as the Gulf Giants bowlers gave them no chance of showcasing any batting pyrotechnics.

Only England Test icon Joe Root (20) and Sri Lanka skipper Dasun Shanaka (23) showed some resistance in what was otherwise a sorry-looking scorecard for the Capitals, as most of their batters walked back for single digit scores.

Even captain Rovman Powell could not unleash his power-hitting skills, as he was sent back to the dugout without troubling the scorers. The Dubai Capitals were eventually bowled out for just 80 runs in the 15th over and this humiliating loss has done some irreparable loss to their overall net run rate.

Seasoned all-rounders David Wiese and Chris Jordan starred with the ball in hand for the Gulf Giants with three scalps each.

Here’s how Twitterati reacted to the Gulf Giants’ dominant performance
