The Bristol crowd witnessed the hosts gain an unassailable lead of 2-0 in the series with another couple of games to play. The Nottinghamshire crowd witnessed a sensational batting performance from England followed by a Gaylestorm which kept Windies hung on to the hopes of victory for a while. Earlier in the day, it was captain Jason Holder who won the toss as the visitors elected to bowl first. This game luckily wasn’t interrupted by rain, unlike the last match.
Batting first, the centurion from the first ODI Jonny Bairstow was dismissed early. England tried to recover from the slump before Alex Hales and Eoin Morgan who has been in the middle of a poor patch were dismissed within a space of three balls. England were reduced to 74/3. That’s when the duo of Joe Root and Ben Stokes struck splendid fifties as both combined for a partnership of 132 runs for the fourth wicket. However, they got out in quick intervals and the early dismissal of Jos Buttler reduced England to 217/6.
That’s when Moeen Ali, the batsman arrived. While he began really slow, Ali accelerated real quick and in no time reached a remarkable century from just 53 balls. Displaying a wide array of shots, he hit 8 sixes and 7 boundaries. All Chris Woakes had to do was rotate the strike and watch Moeen plunder the Windies bowling. England ended up with a huge total of 369/9 in their quota of 50 overs.
In a batting line-up that boasts of a power hitter like Chris Gayle, no target seems safe. While Evin Lewis was dismissed cheaply, Gayle took things under his control as he portrayed some sensible hitting on display. While wickets kept falling at the other end, Gayle continued to score runs at will. At the halfway stage, it seemed that the Windies had a real chance. However, Adil Rashid’s scintillating throw sealed the deal for Gayle who missed out on a century.
The rest of the batting lineup lacked the inspiration to chase such a huge total. Skipper Jason Holder had a few hits to entertain the crowd but that was it for the Windies as the target fell out of their reach. They also didn’t have wickets in hand. In the end, England ended up winning the game by a sensational margin of 124 runs. Liam Plunkett was the pick amongst the English bowlers as he got a five-wicket haul. Adil Rashid also bowled well with three wickets to his name.
Here are some of the amazing Twitter reactions that emerged during the course of the game:
