While a lot was expected from Sri Lanka after their style of play in the previous game, they could hardly give any competition to the opposition in the only T20I against England. The Brits, with their own aggressive style of play, completely upset the rhythm of the opposition.

Jason Roy was the star of the night with some exhilarating batting display. He was the real difference between both the sides. Sri Lanka lost the game by 30 runs and the T20I series is also gone. England, after being put into bat first, came out with a decimating approach into the game. All the batsmen were only looking to take the bowlers on and not worry much about losing their wickets. While this ploy hasn’t worked out perfectly for all, it surely did for Roy. The opener took the opposition bowling apart with some clean hitting.

He raced to 69 runs off 36 balls scoring 52 runs in boundaries and was just brilliant. However, England lost four wickets before there was a rain interruption. At this stage, although the scoring rate was pretty decent, they had lost too many wickets for their liking. With the aid of an 11-ball 27 from Moeen Ali and a handy contribution from Joe Denly, they put up 187/8 in 20 overs.

Sri Lanka didn’t have the best of the starts in pursuit to 188 runs. Denly, who has got this knack of picking early wickets did it yet again for the umpteenth time in his professional career. He sent back both Niroshan Dickwella and Kusal Mendis for 3 and 1 run respectively. Dinesh Chandimal looked good during his brief stay in the middle where he scored 26 runs.

However, most of the Sri Lankan batsmen threw their wickets away after having got off to good starts. Just as the game seemed to be going out of hands, skipper Thisara Perera kept them interested with some big hits. But, with wickets tumbling at the other end, there wasn’t much he could do.

By this time, the required rate was almost Everest-high and he was battling it all alone despite a loss being a certainty. He took his team as close as possible to the target with 57 off 31 before Denly dismissed him in the last over. Sri Lanka were bowled out for 157 in 20 overs.

Twitterati was gratified to see Jason Roy bat the way he did. Adil Rashid, who picked three wickets in his four overs and only gave away 11 runs garnered a lot of praise. Also, Joe Denly, with a four-wicket haul made the most of this opportunity. The Sri Lanka fans were frustrated with yet another one of those wretched performances from the side.

Here is how Twitterati reacted to England’s emphatic win:
