After Zimbabwe were bowled out for 176 in the first innings, Pakistan tightened the screws on the opposition on the second day of the opening Test. At the Harare Sports Club, Babar Azam and Co garnered a lead of 198 runs at the close of play on Day two. The hosts had their moments, picking up six wickets, but they have a tough task at hand if they have to make a comeback in the encounter.

Fawad Alam holds fort for Pakistan

The day didn’t start on an auspicious note for Pakistan as Tendai Chisoro got rid of Abid Ali, who managed 60 runs off 140 balls with 10 fours. Thereafter, Imran Butt and Azhar Ali put on 61 runs for the second wicket, making sure that the visitors go into the lead. Butt notched his maiden Test half-century off 132 balls. Donald Tiripano broke the stand after getting rid of Azhar for a 70-ball 36.

Babar had a rough day as he perished to Tiripano for a golden duck. At the other end, Butt looked determined for a century. But to his dismay, Richard Ngarava got his wicket when he was batting on 91 with seven fours. With Pakistan losing a few quick wickets, the experienced Fawad Alam and the in-form Mohammad Rizwan tried to restore sanity with an impressive partnership of 107 runs.

Donald Tiripano stands out

Blessing Muzarabani added to the wickets’ column after he pinned Rizwan, who had gotten his eyes in after his 106-ball 45 with four fours. In the meantime, Fawad notched a half-century off 72 balls, making sure that Pakistan never fell being the eight-ball. The left-hander made his knock count and went on to score a ton off 144 balls. The veteran stayed unbeaten on 108 from 155 with 16 fours.

Faheem Ashraf couldn’t make an impact as he became Tiripano’s third victim. Faheem couldn’t open his account in the two balls he faced. Hasan Ali took the attacking route as he stayed unbeaten on 21 off 18 with one four and two humongous sixes. Both Fawad and Hasan will be looking to stitch together a partnership and make sure that the Pakistan batters don’t have to bat in the second innings.
