Australia’s historic tour to Pakistan has started in a rather uninspiring manner with the first Test in Rawalpindi ending in a tedious draw. The fact that a total of 14 wickets fell across the three innings and five days, reiterated the dismal nature of the surface. There was not much that happened across the five days to have stirred any excitement amongst fans who for long were looking forward to the commencement of the said tour.

Pakistan elected to bat having won the toss. The pitch had nothing on offer for the bowlers, as the home team piled on the runs. Pakistan’s opening batter, Imam-Ul-Haq, and senior batter in Azhar Ali, both on a comeback trail, could not have asked for a better surface to bat on. The two batters scored 157 and 185 respectively. Pakistan declared at 476-4.

It was then the visitor’s chance to tire the opposition, as Australia started similarly with David Warner and Usman Khawaja sharing a 150+ run opening stand. The pace at which the game was being played made it pretty certain as to what direction it was heading into, a possible draw. Australia was dismissed for 459 runs with Khawaja and Marnus Labuschagne falling tantalizingly close to their centuries. While the opening batter missed his milestone by three runs, Khawaja was out for 90.

The Test in Rawalpindi ended up being more about personal milestones than a competitive game of cricket

The first Test was more about registering personal milestones and records with no real scope of a result being established very early. Pakistan came out for the second innings on Day 5 and continued to bat on a lifeless pitch. Haq continued to make the most of the conditions by bringing up his second century of the match, while the other opener Abdullah Shafique also got the opportunity to score his maiden century. The two openers brought up a 250-run stand. The game that was nothing but laborious for the two bowling units eventually ended in a draw with the two captains shaking hands, thus ending the misery of the viewers.
