The Rajasthan Royals registered a narrow 3-wicket win against the Mumbai Indians in Jaipur recently. Their all-rounder, K Gowtham, undoubtedly played the innings of his life under tremendous pressure. Chasing the target of 168, the Royals looked in firm command of the chase until the 17th over. The Mumbai Indians managed to get back in the game with the Royals middle-order imploding big time.

Jofra Archer, the debutante, and K Gowtham were the last recognized batsmen and the asking equation was above 40 in the final three overs. Gowtham smacked an unbeaten 33 off just 11 deliveries to seal the fate of the game for the Rajasthan Royals. The defeat means that the Mumbai Indians have now lost five matches this season.

Earlier in the match, the Mumbai Indians skipper Rohit Sharma had surprised everybody by choosing to bat first after winning the toss. The move looked like a horrible one with Evin Lewis bagging a golden duck. A marathon stand between Suryakumar Yadav and Ishan Kishan followed that saw both the batsmen scoring their individual fifties.

While Ishan perished after scoring 58 off 42 deliveries, Suryakumar played well for his 47-ball 72 before getting dismissed. The dismissal of the set batsman saw a sudden slump for the defending champions. The wickets started to fall in clusters. In the penultimate over of the game, Jofra Archer, the T20 sensation who made his IPL debut in this game, bagged three wickets to dent Mumbai Indians even more. The innings crashed from 130/1 to 159/7. Eventually, MI could only post 167/7 in their 20 overs.

In the run chase, the Rajasthan Royals lost Rahul Tripathi early on in the innings. Skipper Ajinkya Rahane also failed to leave an imprint on the game. Sanju Samson and Ben Stokes took the run chase forward with a 72-run stand for the third wicket. Stokes played well for his 27-bal 40. He missed out on his fifty but Samson went on to score 52 (39).

The Royals looked in command of the game but the 17th over from Jasprit Bumrah saw Samson and Jos Buttler perishing on successive deliveries. The over yielded just 1 run and MI were back in the game. Soon, Heinrich Klaasen bagged a golden duck. The Royals needed 38 to win off the final 14 deliveries with Archer and Gowtham at the crease.

While Archer perished under pressure in the final over, Gowtham kept his cool to become the hero for the Rajasthan Royals. Such is the irony of the game – last season, Gowtham was with the Mumbai Indians but never got a game to play, and now, he won a game against them almost singlehandedly from the jaws of defeat.

Here is how the fans reacted to the match and Gowtham’s blitz:
