Perth Scorchers have managed to recover from back-to-back defeats in the ongoing edition of the BBL. The Mitchell Marsh-led unit decimated the Sydney Thunder by eight wickets at the Perth Stadium. The Scorchers, after an indifferent start, have now gotten themselves up to fourth in the points table. For Callum Ferguson’s Thunder, they have plenty of work to do, being placed fifth.
Hales shepherds the Thunder
The Thunder elected to bat first, but found the going tough. Barring Alex Hales, none of their batters could up the ante. Usman Khawaja perished to Mitchell Marsh while trying a pull. Fawad Ahmed got rid of Callum Ferguson to pick up the second wicket. The move to promote Arjun Nair didn’t work out as he became Chris Jordan’s first victim. Daniel Sams’ horror run with the bat in hand continued.
Jordan got rid of him to rack his second scalp. Hales, at the other end, milked the bowling without much fuss. The opener accomplished his fifty off 40 balls and went on to play until the last over before getting out to Jordan. Hales notched 85 off 59 with 10 fours and three sixes. Alex Ross crawled to 22 off 24 and the Thunder managed to muster a competitive 153 for five in 20 overs.
Inglis and Livingstone go berserk
The Scorchers got off to a rollicking start, sending the Thunder’s bowlers to the cleaners. Jos Inglis and Liam Livingstone hit 75 runs in the mandatory powerful to put the hosts on the driver’s seat. Inglis copped a blow on the helmet by a bouncer from Gurinder Sandhu, but he replied with a big blow into the stands off a free-hit. The onslaught brought the required-rate down to a run-a-ball.
Livingstone raced to his fifty off 28 balls, depositing Liam Bowe for a six downtown. In the very next over, it was Inglis’ turn to reach his half-century off 31 deliveries. Livingstone got a couple of lifelines as Brendan Doggett dropped him twice. Doggett made amends taking the catch of Inglis, who got a 58 off 41 with six fours and two sixes. Livingstone’s 49-ball 78 see his team through to the win.
