Team Ireland entered the list of elite nations to have played Test cricket in the history of the game. They are currently facing off against Pakistan in their inaugural Test game in Malahide. While they are largely on the backfoot in the game, the homes fans got a reason to celebrate with their veteran all-rounder, Kevin O’Brien entering the record books.
Kevin O’Brien became the first cricketer from Ireland to score a Test century. O’Brien took 186 deliveries to reach the milestone and became only the fourth cricketer to hit a century in an inaugural Test. He joined the elite list of cricketers comprising the names of C Bannerman, D Houghton, Aminal Islam. C Bannerman had hit an unbeaten 165 in the inaugural Test for Australia.
D Houghton had achieved the feat for Zimbabwe in 1992 against India, and Aminul had also achieved the feat against India for Bangladesh in 2000. Talking about the knock played by Kevin O’Brien, it came under a serious pressure situation. The Irish side was down and out in the game and stared directly at an innings defeat. But a defining knock from Kevin O’Brien is keeping the hosts in the game.
They might not win the game but the efforts of the veteran cricketer deserves to be lauded. Kevin hit 9 boundaries before reaching his milestone number. Earlier in the game, the Irish side had opted to bowl after having won the toss. Pakistan declared their first innings at 310/9 on the third day’s play. The first day of the Test was a washed out day.
Ireland, in their first innings, were reeling at 7/4 at one stage. Interestingly, it was Kevin who had bailed them out of trouble back then as well. He had top scored for the side with 40 to his name as Ireland finished with 130 on the board. Following on, they needed someone to stay at the crease for long and it was Kevin who was at the service of his team yet again. The fans and the cricket fraternity are going gaga over his achievement.
Here is how the cricket fraternity reacted to Kevin O’Brien’s century:
