West Indies registered their first victory of the home series against India after losing four games on the trot from the ODI series and have now levelled the five-match T20I series 1-1. This also turned out to be their first T20I win over the Men in Blue in three years. The Nicholas Pooran-led side managed to restrict India to a low score and a good finish from the likes of Devon Thomas ensured that the hosts got over the line in a nail-biting thriller.

Earlier in the game, West Indies opted to bowl first after winning the toss at St. Kitts and the move worked out splendidly as Obed McCoy got the skipper Rohit Sharma off the first ball of the game. Suryakumar Yadav (11) and Shreyas Iyer (10) perished early after hitting a six each while Rishabh Pant wasn’t wasting any time getting onto the act with two sixes in his 12-ball 24.

At 61 for 4, with the top four batters gone, the likes of Hardik Pandya and Ravindra Jadeja built up a solid partnership by rotating the strike with the odd boundaries. Jason Holder got the dangerous Pandya for a 31-ball 31 while Dinesh Karthik never got going during his 13-ball stay. McCoy came back for another spell and got the wickets of Jadeja, Karthik, Ashwin and Bhuvneshwar to ensure India did not get the final finish.

In the end, India were bundled out for just 138 in 19.4 overs on the back of a brilliant bowling spell from McCoy. The left-arm pacer picked up 6 for 17 in his four overs, which included a maiden, registering fourth-best figures in T20Is among full member teams.

Brandon King provides a sizzling start to the run chase

During the run chase, West Indies had an excellent powerplay scoring 46 runs without any loss and the bulk of the runs came off the bat of Brandon King who kept finding the boundaries. Mayers was dismissed after the powerplay for a 14-ball 8 while skipper Nicholas Pooran (14) and Shimron Hetmyer (6) were removed quickly. Despite wickets falling around, King reached a fantastic half-century and kept the run chase going.

After a 52-ball 68, Avesh cleaned up King with a yorker while Arshdeep from the other end got the dangerous Rovman Powell with another yorker. With 10 needed off the last over, Avesh bowled a no-ball, which changed the momentum towards the host nation and Thomas’ 19-ball 31 which included two big sixes was enough to secure a victory for the West Indies side.
