The Delhi Capitals (DC) have registered their second consecutive win in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL). They defeated the three-time champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) comfortably by 44 runs. Surprisingly, the CSK never looked in the game on the day and come the chase, their batsmen looked even more dull. But the credit has to go to the Capitals for covering all their bases and making sure they executed their plans after being invited to bat.

Prithvi Shaw set the pace of the innings early on for the Capitals. He was out off the second ball of the innings itself but neither MS Dhoni nor the bowler Deepak Chahar heard the nick and nobody appealed. Shaw made the most of the reprieve and played some beautiful strokes taking on the spinners Ravindra Jadeja and Piyush Chawla. DC started off decently with Shaw and Shikhar Dhawan scoring 36 runs in the powerplay.

However, keeping the wickets in hand helped them to launch against the spin-bowling duo of CSK. With only five up his sleeve, Dhoni had no option to continue with them. Chawla once again went for runs in his first couple of overs while Jadeja conceded 44 runs off his four-over spell. The former, however, made a good comeback picking both the opening batsmen.

Dhawan was the first one to go for 35 off 27 and played the second fiddle for his partner. Shaw put on the exhibition of sumptuous strokes during his 43-ball 64 with nine fours and a six to his name before getting out to Chawla. However, once the opening partnership of 94 runs was broken, CSK managed to comeback into the game. They kept a lid on the run-scoring despite the third-wicket partnership between Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant.

The DC skipper struggled to get going and the 58-run stand was broken in the 19th over. But the duo took 40 deliveries to score those runs and one felt CSK pulled things back without picking up enough wickets. Rishabh Pant though did well to remain unbeaten on 37 off 25 as DC posted 175 runs for the loss of three wickets.

The dull chase

CSK were criticised for not showing any intent during their 217-run chase against the Royals. This time around, they had to gun down 176 and the intent was similar much to everyone’s surprise. Their openers Shane Watson and Murali Vijay struggled for the third game in a row. Once again both the batsmen took their time and scored only 14 and 10 runs respectively before getting out.

Faf du Plessis came out to bat at three but there was no pace to the innings at all with Ruturaj Gaikwad also struggling to get going. Even after the end of powerplay overs, CSK couldn’t up the ante like DC did earlier in the game. Amit Mishra and Axar Patel bowled well in the middle overs to keep a check on the CSK batsmen and by the time, the last five overs were left, the game was out of reach for the three-time champions.

Du Plessis tried to accelerate but even he couldn’t do it after getting set thanks to DC bowlers who were exceptional on the day. MS Dhoni too came out to bat a position late once again sending Kedar Jadhav ahead of him. With Kagiso Rabada and Anrich Nortje to bowl in the last four overs, there was no chance for CSK to score 75 runs.

Du Plessis got out in the 18th over trying to score quickly and even the might of MS Dhoni, with his waning power couldn’t do anything. Eventually, they finished on just 131 for the loss of six wickets after 20 overs to lose the game by 44 runs. The DC bowlers were absolutely brilliant on the day as they executed their plans well to restrict the opposition.
