Mushfiqur Rahim and Mohammad Mithun’s late vigil meant that Bangladesh went into stumps with three wickets down at the end of the second day’s play against the West Indies. The Tigers put their heads down for a comeback, but the visiting team can still be said to have the upper hand at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium. Kraigg Brathwaite and Co lead by 154 runs with eight wickets left.

Cornwall runs through

Mushfiqur would be gutted with the way got out. Having scored 54 with seven fours, the Bogra-born was seeing the ball like a football. But then, he went for a reverse-sweep off Rahkeem Cornwall and holed out to Kyle Mayers. Mithun couldn’t hold his fort for long, becoming Cornwall’s third victim. At that point in time, Bangladesh were behind the 8-ball and needed someone to put his hands down.

With the Tigers in strife, Liton Das and Mehidy Hasan Miraz joined hands. The duo put on 126 runs for the seventh wicket and got the trail down to 128. Liton notched his second fifty in succession off 92 balls and looked determined to carry on. But a cheeky paddle sweep resulted in his dismissal. He got out after scoring 71 runs with seven fours. He fell to Cornwall, who was on a role for his team.

Bangladesh on the backfoot

Cornwall picked up his second five-wicket haul when he got rid of Nayeem Hasan for a duck. Mehidy carried on from where he left in Chattogram and racked up yet another fifty. He scored 57 off 140 before falling prey to Shannon Gabriel. Earlier, Gabriel tried to ruffle Mehidy with some bouncers, but the latter was responding with smiles. In the end, the fast bowler got to have the last laugh.

The Tigers were bowled out for 296 as the Caribbean team garnered a lead of 113 runs. The visitors didn’t get off to the best of starts as Nayeem picked up Brathwaite’s wicket. Shayne Moseley succumbed to yet another failure, getting out to Mehidy.

It was also the 100th wicket for Mehidy in Test cricket and he got to the milestone faster than Shakib Al Hasan. Taijul Islam also accounted for John Campbell’s wicket at the fag end of the day’s play.
