Brisbane Heat and Adelaide Strikers locked horns at The Gabba in Brisbane in the opening match of this season’s Big Bash League (BBL). In the end, it was Colin Ingram’s men who managed to brush aside the hosts in a closely-fought contest by five wickets. The likes of Alex Carey and Rashid Khan put their best foot forward and helped the defending champions start their campaign on an impressive note.

Rashid bowls brilliantly

After the Strikers won the toss and elected to bowl, they got off to a stupendous start as Billy Stanlake got rid of Brendon McCullum in the second ball. However, Max Bryant and Chris Lynn pressed the accelerator and notched a 46-run stand off 30 balls. Peter Siddle nipped out the latter, who was looking ominous with a knock of 33 with four boundaries and a couple of colossal sixes.

Joe Burns looked good for his 20, but he became Stanlake’s second victim. In the next 11 overs, Brisbane Heat could only score only 68 runs and lost seven wickets, Rashid Khan, after conceding 10 in his first over,  took three crucial wickets, including that of the dangerous Ben Cutting. It was only because of Mujeeb Ur Rahman’s 22-ball 27 at number 11 that Adelaide was able to notch 146 runs.

Carey blazes away

Strikers got off to a blistering start as Alex Carey and Jake Weatherald stitched together a partnership of 56 runs from 33 balls. Carey was the aggressor in the stand, which was eventually broken by Joe Burns. Thereafter, the visitors strained a wee bit. Colin Ingram was the next man to perish as James Pattinson picked up his first wicket. Matthew Short struggled while Carey continued his domination.

Pattinson got his second wicket in the form of Short. Leg-spinner Mitchell Swepson got the massive wicket of Carey, who scored 70 from 46 balls with five fours and four sixes. At that point in time, the Strikers needed 39 runs from 36 balls and the remainder of the chase was expected to be a cakewalk. Jake Lehmann and Jonathan Wells played a couple of priceless hands to take Adelaide Strikers to victory.
